Mr W. Downie Stewart, M.P., has returned to Dunedin from Wellington. Mr W. Bryant left on his return to Tinwald yesterday after attending a meeting of the Waipiata Sanatorium CommitDr J. D. S almond left yesterday by the mid-day express, en route for Wellington, where he will attend the sessions of the assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Mr L. J. List, of Wellington, left Dunedin on his return home by the second express yesterday. Mr F. Halsted, who is to be married in Melbourne shortly, left by the mid-day express yesterday, en route for Australia. Members of the Police Force and the detective staff met at the Central Station yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Detective Sergeant P. Doyle, who is about to leave on transfer to the commissioner's office in Wellington. On behalf of those present. Superintendent Fraser presented Mr Doyle with a suitcase, a travelling rug, and a shaving outfit, aud regret at his departure was exprsesed by Inspector O'Halloran, Senior Sergeant Packer, Chief Detective Young, Detective Russell, Sergeant Stark, and others. Mr Doyle returned thanks, and assured the gathering that his association with the Dunedin staff had been one of the most pleasant of his career. Prior to his departure for abroad, Mr J. R. Fairbairn, managing director of Messrs Fairbairn, Henderson, Ltd., and of Messrs Irvine and Co., Ltd., was met by the staffs of these two companies and made the recipient of gifts from each Mr Wilson, on behalf of the staff of Messrs Fairbairn, Henderson, Ltd.,' ana Mr Kennelly, for Messrs Irvine and Co.'s staff, in making the presentations, wished Mr Fairbairn a pleasant trip, and referred to the happy relations existing between him and the staffs. Later Mr and Mrs Fairbairn entertained the combined staffs at their home in Warrender street, where a very enjoyable evening was spent in cards and music. At a meeting of R Squadron, Legion of Frontiersmen, last evening, the officer commanding. Colonel G. R. Mitchell, referred to the approaching departure of Lieutenant David H. Graham from Dunedin. Speaking of his work, Colonel Mitchell said Lieutenant Graham had given very valuable service as liaison officer and overseas correspondent, and headquarters had recognised his work by attaching him to the New Zealand staff. The members of R Squadron were extremely sorry to lose Lieutenant Graham, and they all wished him every success wherever he might be stationed. On behalf of R Squadron Colonel Mitchell presented Lieutenant Graham with a silver-mounted walking stick. Lieutenant A. Klee said Lieutenant Graham was one of the foundation members of R Squadron, and he had done a tremendous amount of work for the Legion throughout New Zealand. His services on behalf of the squadron and the legion had been frequently highly commented on by the commandant for New Zealand (Major J. C. Findlater) and other executive officers. On behalf of the members of R Squadron Corporal C. Tucker presented Lieutenant Graham with a framed embossed Legion badge Lieutenant Graham said it was a hard wrench to break away from R Squadron, but he would always retain happy memories of the happy times SDent with the boys. Anything he had done in the course of his duties had been for the love of the Legion. Lieutenant Graham will leave Dunedin by to-morrow's express for the north. i
