THE Otago Daily Times. " Inveniam viam aut faciam." DUNEDIN, MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1864.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

SHIPPING. PORT CHALMERS—Oct. 30. The ship Gala (815 tons, from Glasgow) was towed up as far as the head of the cross channel. . . . The Gala, which visited this port a few years ago, is a fine iron ship of unusual strength of build, and a vessel in many respects suited for the colonial carrying and passenger trade. . . . She sailed from the Clyde on July 15th. The passage from port to port has thus occupied 104 .days, and from land to land 90 days. The full complement oi' 72 passengers arrived all well. COMMERCIAL. Daily Times Office, Saturday Evening. M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co. have to report the sale of European Hotel, and furniture, to-day, for L 930. . . ■ Now that the Assembly is convened, the next question one asks oneself is, what will it do ? The mere meeting of tho Assembly will be productive of no benefit; we have only to turn to the last two sessions to arrive at the conclusion that the Legislature may be sitting a very considerable time without achieving any good. Indeed, if the whole of the work of the last session could be blotted out, it would be fortunate for the Colony. From beginning to end it was one series of blunders of omission and commis--sion. . . . A special meeting of the Highland Company will be held this evening, at the Drill Shed, in reference to news received from Melbourne that tartan and other necessaries of costume can be supplied from thence. The Committee of the newly-formed Cavalry Corps (the " Otago Light Horse ') aro to meet this afternoon, at four o'clock, at the Provincial Hotel. The principal business is to draw up a memorial to the Governor in Council, for his formal approval of the Corps, and to adopt the uniform. ... The Contractor for the uniform of the No. 2 Company (Scottish) is to attend at M'Cnbbin's Hotel to-day, from 12 at noon till 8 p.m., to measure the members of the Company for their uniform. The Drawing of the 500 Sovs, Sweep on the Melbourne Cup and Ascot Vale Stakes, came off most successfully on Saturday evening, at the Provincial Hotel, under the management of Mr F. D. Hamilton. The long room was crowded. . . . In continuation of this sporting speculation, and to prove the current prices of the animals engaged, we are informed by Mr Hamilton that a Calcutta Sweep, with no blanks, will be drawn next Saturday, at the Empire Hotel. The first drill of the City Rifle Corps wiil take place this evening, at half-past seven o'clock. . . . We have to acknowledge the receipt of the first uumber of a new weekly journal published at Waikouaiti, under the title of the "Waikouaiti Herald." The paper is the same size as the " Oamaru Times," and presents a very creditable appearance. We heartily wish our young contemporary success. About 200 emigrants, including men, women, and children, arrived at Auckland on the 14th instant from the Cape of Good Hope by the barque Stcinwarder. . . . The barque Alford, a vessel of about 500 tons, was to follow the Steinwarder with about 400 more emigrants for this province. . . . The "Southern Cross" makes the following remarks: "We may add, that although there is likely to be an extensive immigration here from the Cape if encouraged, we have not heard of anything to warrant the belief that it will take place without encouragement in the shape of free passages and grants of land."
