PALMERSTON Borough Council The monthly meeting of the local Borough Council wa9 held on Tuesday evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway),-and Crs Pastier, Ross, Morrison, Hodgetts, Hopkins, Earley, and Riddle. The Automobile Association (North Otago) advised that a circular, calling motorists' attention to excessive speeding through Maheno, Herbert, Hampden, and Palmerston, had been issued to all their members. —Received. In reference to the proposed new Athenaeum poll, it was decided to take the vote on November 27. and the clerk was instructed to prepare the special roll. It was decided to purchase a concrete miser for the borough, to assist; in tho proposed curbing and channelling. It was decided to install a new drain on the bowling green road at the foot of Cr Morrison's section. Manuherikia irrigation ccheme is attracting a great deal of attention just .now. The farming community has been looking forward to the completion of this scheme for. some time past. The new hotel.will.soon be completed, A large new general store is also in the course of erection and should be finished beforeChristmas. MIDDLEMARCH Lawn Tennis ,' *- • A Yankee tournament was held on the Middlemarch Lawn Tennis. Club's courts on Monday af ternooon. The weather was fine, and there was a large number of members and friends present. The tournament was ably controlled by the president (Mr Pacey) and Mr Gillespie, and the section winners in the Mixed Doubles were Miss A. Beattie and Mr A, M'Gregor and Miss G. Elliot and Mr C. Williams. In the final, Mis 6G. Elliot and Mr C. Williams were the winners' by 30 to 28. In the men's double section, Mr J. Colgan and Mr A. M'Gregor were the winners.. ' , / Swimming Baths A public meeting,, convened by Mr James Howell as chairman of the School Committee, was; held in the school last week, the object of the meeting being to discuss a proposal for forming a Swimming Bath Club and the construction of school swimming baths. The meeting was well attended, and the proposals were enthusiastically received. It was finally agreed that a club be formed, and the following committee was appointed to, iio furthtr into the matter to ascertain where a suitable site could be.-secured for the baths, and to place a. definite proposal before a further meeting:—Mr J. Howell (president), Mr R. Hamilton, (secretary), and Messrs F. and W. East, J. East, E. Jeffs, J. M'Master, -W. G. Thompson, H. Farquhar, G. Gillespie, and R. Elliott. /- - Band Concert Those who attended the concert on Tuesday evening in the Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Hall given by the touring band of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind were treated to an entertainment which is . seldom heard by a country audience. The concert was opened with several selections by the band,, after which the chairman . (Mr F. Howell) spoke a few words of welcome. The hall was crowded, and the takings at the ; door for the evening amounted to £2B, while over £2O was collected in donations. Sir Clutha M'Keuzie, director of the institute, in his reply, dealt with some of the various branches of usefulness of the institute, and returned thanks for the support accorded, and appealed for continued interest.
