AMATEUR SWIMMING

FIRST FIXTURE OF SEASON OTAGO CENTRE'S CARNIVAL Always one of the most popular fixtures of the season, the Otago Swimming Centre's annual Labour Night carnival, which was held last night in the Municipal Baths, attracted an attendance that packed every available inch of seating accommodation around the pool. The carnival was declared open by the Mayor (the Eev. E. T. Cox), who said lie regarded swimming as the finest of all sports. The Otago Swimming Ceutre had requested the City Council's support in having constructed in Dunedin a new and up-to-date swimming baths with a oroper Olympic pool 50 metres in length, but this was a work that could not be undertaken without the consent of the ratepayers, which wag necessary before a poll could be taken and a loan raised to provide a required amount of about £25,000. If, however, the centre made itself responsible for the necessary propaganda, he was sure that the council would assist, and it was to be hoped that within 12 months a poll would he carried, ■i loan raised, and rhe work of construction well under way. Good entries, and handicapping that brought the swimmers together in some close and exciting finishes, were responsible for keen and interesting racing, and for so early in the season the majority of the competitors displayed remarkably good form. Additional interest was lent to the meeting by the appearance of such well-known performers as the Jarvis brothers, R. Geddes, B. E. Mathieson, and G. P. Chambers, all holders of New Zealand titles, Miss P. Sporlo, the Manawatu and ex-New Zealand champiou, and several members of the crew of H.M.S. Dunedin, who, as well as competing in individual events, entered two relay teams. Perhaps the best performance of the evening was that of R. Geddes, who, conceding 21sec to the limit man in the 100 Yards Breastetroke Handicap, won his heat in the fast time of 70 2-ssec. and took third place in the final. Another impressive swim was that of Missel. Purdie, an intermediate member of Kiwi Club, who turned in 09 4-ssec in her heat of the 100 Yards Ladies' Handicap, and clipped another 4-ssec off these figures in the final. . During the evening an amusing novelty burlesque was staged by a party of ratings from H.M.S. Dunedin. another refreshing interlude being a punt-fight arranged by members of the St. Clair Life Saving Club. Following are the results.
