THE SUMMER SHOW

While the decision of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society to postpone its annual Summer Show till February has been dictated by a circumstance that confronted it with a rather awkward situation, namely the appropriation to election day of one of the dates upon which it proposed to hold its fixture at the usual time, it may reasonably be hoped that the change may not be unattended with compensations. The opportunity will now be afforded of putting to the test a question which has frequently been discussed. The desirability of holding the Society’s show of stock in the autumn month, about the time of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s cup meeting, has been urged on various occasions. A good deal of support has been given to the proposal that, as in Christchurch at the time of the New Zealand Cup meeting, there should be a carnival week during which the interests of visitors might be catered for as liberally as possible. The proposal, which was raised again, it is to be noted, at the special meeting at which the Society’s decision regarding a postponement was reached, has not come to anything hitherto, the main objection being apparently that these pastoral shows are held in a rotation that would be upset by an alteration in the date of the Otago Society’s exhibition. The postponement of the show on this occasion, for a reason which must suggest itself to exhibitors as quite sound, will give the community an opportunity, if it is so disposed, to see what it can do in exploiting the circumstance in an enterprising spirit. In any case the Otago A. and P. Society, which has no particular reason to regard November as the ideal month for its annual open-air fixture, will be enabled to form a judgment based on actual experience of the suitability of February as a substitute.
