MANCHESTER UNITY

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Valley Lodge was held on Monday last. N.G. Bro. MTate presided and welcomed a number of visiting brethren, including P.G.M. Bro. J. D. Cameron, of the District Executive, and P.G. Bro. J. Carrington (Albion). One new member was initiated and one proposition for membership received. The secretary of the Hand and Heart Cricket Club wrote suggesting November 10 as the date for a cricket match with Valley Lodge. The II.G. announced that arrangements were in hand for a pingpong tournament to be hold in the Valley Lodge next lodge night. Ladies’ evening was afterwards held, the N.G. welcoming a large attendance of members and the ladies. An enjoyable euchre tournament followed, at the conclusion of which prizes were presented to Miss Pain, winner, and Miss Admore, booby. Bros. J. Lees and J. Tyrrell received the men’s trophies. Advice received from Prov. Secretary Bro. J. A. Hopcraft, who left some time ago on a holiday trip abroad, indicate that he is having an enjoyable tour. After travelling through England and Scotland and getting much pleasure in seeing the sights of beauty and historic interest, he visited the Continent. Crossing from Dover to Ostencl he has visited, among other places, Brussels,’ Cologne, Munich, Bruges, the Austrian Tyrol, Genoa, Venice, Pisa, Rome, Naples, Milan, Zurich and Locarno. Bro. Hopcraft states that he was profoundly impressed with the magnificence of the art, architectural beauties and the scenic grandeur, and deeply interested in the different types of humanity and the modes of life in the centres that he visited. Members will be pleased to know that Bro. Hopcraft’s well-earned holiday is apparently being enjoyed to the full. The Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge held its fortnightly meeting at Lawrence, the N.G. presiding over a good attendance of members. Two brethren were placed on the sick funds. One new member was initiated. Regret was expressed at the fact that P.G. Bro. Simpson, who had accepted an appointment at Balclutha, will be severing his active connection with the lodge. At the recent initiation competition Bro. Simpson acted as conductor, and in the working of the lodge generally he took a prominent part. Before the meeting closed P.P.G.M. Bro. A. L. Hart, on behalf of members, conveyed their sympathy to Per. Sec. Bro. J. Russell on the death of hia brother.
