SPRING MEETING OPENED BIG RACE TO ARCTIC KING - PELMET WINS THE STAKES (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 26. The Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting was opened at Trentham to-day in steady rain from the south, hut the weather lifted soon after the start, the remainder of the day being fine, though cold. The attendance was only fair. The track was soft and slow. The totalisator handled £21,745 (win £10.817, place £10,928), an increase of £4BB on the correspotiding day last year. Following are the results:— GLEN HURDLES HANDICAP. Of 200sovs. One mile and three-quarters. 7/6—F. S. Easton’s hr g MANAWATU (Acre —Merry Sarto). 6yrs, 10.9 (P. Burgess) 1 3/3—Miss Wilson’s MONASTIC, 9.8 (Dulieu) 2 4/4—W. J. Arctic Star tried to lead all the way, but tired crossing the last fence, Manawatu taking charge. Monastic came with a great run on the inside, but failed by a head. Spiral led early, being passed by Silver Sight at seven furlongs. Silver Sight, Fersen, and Arctic King led into the straight, the last-named finishing beat to win by a neck, with Sunee half a length back, and Argentic fourth, after being last at the half-mile. The placed horses, with Wild Chase and Moquette, were all prominent to the straight, where Pelmet came through on the rails to win nicely by half a neck. He was challenged by Variant on the outer and Silver Streak on the rails in the straight, but held on to win by a neck, with Silver Streak a hare length away, and Haut Monde fourth.
