DUNEDIN REPERTORY SOCIETY

The Dunedig Repertory Society has firmly established itself as a means both of providing an extremely large number of amateurs with good opportunities for dramatic endeavour and of providing the theatre-going public with an excellent substitute for the travelling companies which formerly supplied Dunedin’s legitimate stage. The society has been wise, first in giving scope and encouragement to as many as possible of the potential actors in its ranks, and secondly, in choosing for presentation plays which are of real worth and lasting value. An excellent choice has been made by the society in selecting Somerset Maugham’s’ play, “ The Circle,” for its next production. The nain# of Somerset Maugham is one to conjure with in the theatrical world, and it is noteworthy that he himself regards this play as his best effort; and this opinion may he said to be borne out by the stupendous success accorded the play whenever it has been produced in the Old World. There is a wealth of romance in the story of “ The Circle,” as well as abundant wit and many cleverly-contrived situations which call for admiration; and there is every reason to expect that the cast of experienced amateurs who are to take part will do these features justice. The staging promises to be something above ordinary, and the frocks are being specially designed for the occasion. The production is in the capable hands of Miss Bessie Thomson, and the first performance will be given on November 13. The session will coatings for four nights.
