TAIERI COUNTY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was held yesterday at Mosgiel and was attended by Crs C. I 1 indlay (in the chair), G. Stevenson J. H. Gow, J. A. Wither, W. I. Nichol. F. Howell and W. K. Kirk. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1777 19s 2d were passed for payment. WORKS REPORT. The inspector of works (Mr J. Garrett) reported as follows; East Taieri Riding.—3o7 yards of maintenance gravel have been run out from Kirkland’s dump, on the following roads: —Shand’e, Riverside and Centre. Gladstone and Cemetery roads have been graded with the power grader. The dragline is at present taking out maintenance gravel from the Silverstream at Silverside. North Taieri Riding.—Gladstone and Wingatui roads have been surfaced, also the Taioma road. A 6in pipe culvert has been put in on Gibson’s to Muir’s road. A 9in pipe culvert has also been put in on Guy's road, Janefield. Kaikorai Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced and water tables cleaned: —M'Meekin’s, Blackwood’s, Fernhill, Townley’s and Kaikorai Valley. Otokia Riding.—The following roadfe have been surfaced: —MTntosh’s, Duffy’s, Otokia-Kuri Bush, Tukatau, Saddle Hill, and Allanton to Serogg’s Hill, Contract No. GG, for the delivery of 1200 yards of gravel on Highway No. 5, Green Island, to Taieri Mouth road, which was let to D. Renton at last meeting, has been cancelled, D. Renton having decided not to go on with the work. The next lowest tenderer, Mr J. Mowat, has taken the contract and the work is now in progress. Outram Riding.—Under Brenssell’s contract, 531 yards of maintenance gravel have been run out on the Outram to Allanton, Nichol’s and Church roads. Two hundred and fifty-five yards of gravel from the Taieri River Trust dump at Reid’s have been run out on Dow’s to Lee Creek road. The ford over the Lee Stream on the Outram to Hindoo road has been repaired. This road was badly scoured during the last flood. D. Millar’s, and the Allanton to Berwick roads have been surfaced. Maungatua Riding.—Sixty yards of gravel from the Taieri River Trust dump at Reid’s have been run out on the Woodside to Lee Creek road. The Berwick streets have been graded with the power grader. The Henley to Berwick, and Otokia-Maungatua roads have been surfaced. Deep Stream Riding.—The grading of the roads in the Hindon district is in progress. The running out of schist metal on Reid’s road, Shannon, is in progress. The contractor has made good progress with contract No. G7 —supply and delivery of 1120 yards of gravel on the Sutton to Mat; irae road, in Deep Stream and Strath Taieri ridings. ! The Mount Allan and Hindon to Boyd’s roads have been surfaced. Strath Taieri Riding.—The Dry Ridge road has been graded with the power grader from the junction of Cottesbrook to J. Allan’s. Two new culverts have been* put in at the upper end. A washout on the big culvert on Dodd's road, Moonlight, has been repaired. The rubbish dump at Cottesbrook bridge has been cleaned up. Highways.—No. 2: The section from Mosgiel to West Taieri Church has been graded with the power grader and water tables have been cleaned out. The hill section from Lee Stream to Sutton has been surfaced. No. 3; Water tables have been cleaned, and general surface work carried out. No. 4; Four*hundred and forty yards of maintenance gravel from the Taieri River Trust dump at Reid’s have been run out on the section from Woodside to Maungatua. No. 5; Contract No. (30. delivery of 1200 yards of gravel on the section from Green Island Borough boundary to Brighton, is in progress. This section has also been graded with the power grader. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The traffic, building, and sanitary in-

spector (Mr J. Williamson) reported that 32 drivers’ licences nod four heavy traffic licences had been tanned. Two building permits had been granted. All slaughter houses and piggeries were in good order. The report was adopted. RANGER’S. REPORT. The ranger (Mr J. Williamson) reported that 39 cattle had been found wandering on county roads. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from the Health Stamp Campaign Committee, and it was decided to make a cjonation of £2 2s to its funds. . The city engineer (Mr J. G. Alexander) wrote in regard to the legalising and repairing of certain roads in the county in connection with the Deep Creek pipe line. The countyls consent to the making of a survey was also asked. —It was decided that the < hairman and Cr Gow should meet representatives of the City Council on the grownd. The question of purchasing certain property for road purposes was left in the hands of the chairman and clerk. The Ocean View Improvement Society wrote asking that attention should be given to. the old .cu'eamery road to Baker’s gate, and drawing attention to the state of the footpath.---Received. Mr W. J. Edigair (Hindon) wrote asking for permission 'to erect a private telephone line alon.fg the road from the post office to his residence.—Permission was granted subject i±t> the usual conditions. Mr D. MTLfue (Middlemarch) wrote stating that he was very disappointed at the manner in which his request for attention to his road had been dealt with by the council. It was 12 months since he had made his request and now that a Government gnant was available he thought the worj: should be done. If the grant were allowed to lapse it would take another 12 moniths to revive it.—lt was decided to reply that the money was not yet available. Mrs E. Callander wrote reminding the council of its promise to metal the road lending to her property at Scrogg’s Hill. —lt was decide dto supply 200 yards of metal. Mr K. W. G are (Middlemarch) wrote asking the council to honour its promise to metal his ro ad. —It was decided to attend to the' matter. Mr J. W. Bush (Brighton) asked for a crossing to b(e improved.—lt was agreed to do the work. Mr A. Baster (Brighton) asked for his road to be gravelled.—This was agreed to. TENDERS. The tender of J. J. Brogan for the supply of IOOp cubic yards of gravel for the Kyeburn-iMiddlemarch road was accepted, the todal amount being £95 IGs Bd.
