CHRISTIAN RIGHT TO FIGHT
If all the nations of the League were ready to fight for peace they would not have to do so, for no one would challenge them, writes the Archbishop of York in his diocesan leaflet. But it is quite probable, Dr Temple continues, that some nation will want to test its readiness, and that will be the critical moment. Our first duty as Christians is to proclaim the Gospel as the power that can banish war, but to go on from that to deny the right of the Christian J j use force for the maintenance of law against lawless force is, I am convinced, heretical. We may honour those who take that position, and it is from the Christian standpoint the noblest of errors, but we may, and I think we must, regard it as error none the less.
