ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA TERRIBLE WEATHER MET LONDON, October 24. Meeting terrible weather after leaving Marseilles, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, upon landing at Brindisi, decided to return to London. He arrived at Marseilles at 2.40 p.m. on the return journey, and is expected to reach Croydon this evening. Sir Charles telegraphed that ice formed on the wings, compelling him to return. The ice had damaged the edge of the wing, necessitating repairs in London. PLANE RETURNS TO LONDON LONDON, October 24. When Sir Charles Kingsford Smith landed at Croydon at 8 o’clock to-night the officials stated that they had not seen a machine in worse condition and still flying. The edges of the wings were badly torn and the woodwork affected as the result of hail, snow, and ice formation. The airman said he would take off again as soon as the plane was repaired.
