SLASHER A PROMISING COLT

(Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, October 24. The three-year-old Rapier colt Slasher, who is one of the Chokebore team at Trentham, is a very attractive individua , and looks likely to develop into a useful horse. He is well-grown and a fiver chestnut in colour. He is a half-brother to Brambletorn and a good horse. With experience Slasher may reach good class. Wild Chase and Paper Slipper, the two Paper Money colts that will carry Sir Charles Clifford’s colours at Trentham, are two entirely different types. 'Vila Chase is a well set-up bay while Paper Slipper is smaller and a brown with a white blaze. His colouring is not unlike that good Paper Money sprinter Silver Streak. Roth moved well in their short sprint this morning. Wild Chase looks a good solid type. Guarantee’s recent racing record inclicates that he is at the top of his form, and he looked a lit horse when stripped for work. Always inclined to be a bit straggly in his action, he is one who will appreciate the easing of the tracks. His stable mate, Black Duke, bears his years remarkably well. Arctic King wore a boot over a band-an-e on the leg he struck on Tuesday morning, but he shows no signs of soreness, and it was only a precautionary measure. His dam, Snowlaud, has foaled a sister to him. Rompnlong worked very well under a good weight, and appears to be an improving three-year-old who sticks 011 solidly. . . , Dawning Light quite tailed to run up to expectations at the recent Auckland meeting, but she showed this morning that she has lost none of her pace. May be it was the reverse way of going which stopped her at Ellerslie.

Pelmet is a very sensible filly, '"'I 10 does her work easily. She will probably look small against some ot Her opponents on Saturday, but she is very neatly moulded and a good mover. Although Hostis and Variant have not raced vet this season, both appear torward and to have done plenty of work. Hostis was a winner here in January, but at his last appearance at the autumn meeting he was beaten by Jubilee bong. Variant has not been a winner since the Oaks last November, but she has been placed, and at her last start ran third to Heritage and Inflation in the C.J.U. Challenge Stakes. Light rain fell at intervals throughout the day at Trentham. .1 ho prospects were a little better this evening, though there is little or no upward move on the barometer. The going will be good and easy if it clears before the lacing. Scratchingfi have reduced the field for the Ri mu taka Hack Handicap below the necessity for a division, and it will now be run as one race. Dampier, \ inco, and Meritor were withdrawn to-day, while there is also the likelihood of one or two more scratchings before the race. Brackets in this event have -thus undergone a change, and now are:—Miracle and Boomerang, Conversion and Dark Red, Gate Crasher and Gold P ein, Myriam and Prevail. Miracle and Gold Vein are both unlikely runners, but as they have not been officially scratched they appear in the book.
