CHAIN DRUG STORES
TO THE EDITOR. Silt,—l have no argument with your correspondent “ Pharmacy,” but I cannot pass his letter without comment. 'When two well-known firms started the grocery business on the chain store system, nothing was said about the small grocers who were pushed into the background. Some of these small grocers were compelled to shut up shop and resort to “ the dole,” while others can barely make a living. The same may be said about the hardware and crockery shopkeepers and
fancy goods dealers and seed merchants, who are also hard hit by two well-known firms which have chain stores throughout New Zealand. Now that Messrs Boots, Ltd., are trying to bring their goods to this country, a big squeal is made. Why? Is it because a certain chemistry firm will have competition and thus have its huge profits reduced? I think it is about time the price of medicine was reduced, and I believe there are dozens of poor people who think so, too.—l am, etc., Chemistry. St. Hilda, October 24.
