UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
NATIONAL WORKERS* MOVEMENT The general meeting of the Dunedin Central Branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held on Tuesday evening. Cr M. Silverstone (president) presided over a good attendance of members and their wives. An important circular was received from the Minister of Employment, intimating that the complaints received from the organisation would be recognised by the Labour Bureau, and that the request for a maternity grant for expectant mothers had received sympathetic consideration from the Unemployment Board, which had instructed certifying ofiicers, on production of satisfactory evidence, to advance to their next higher conjugal classification the husbands of those women who were expecting to bo confined. The rise in status would take place three months before the date on which the birth was expected to eventuate. The Social Committee’s report on the dances hold in the Trades Hall wore considered satisfactory. The secretary intimated that the dance on Friday would be the last for the season. The president appealed to all present to attend the monster joy night in the
Early Settlers’ Hall on October 110, and said that Big Brother Bill would entertain with a first-class concert party, and all children would receive fruit and lollies. Important remits were drawn up to be sent on to the National Executive for the National Conference in Wellington in November. A deputation was appointed to attend the next meeting of the City Council in a further effort to make ample provision for tlie youth of the country by protesting to the Government. A few complaints from groups were _ referred to the executive to have rectified, A resolution was carried that the association request the Government to support the immediate application of the sanctions against Italy, ns carried out by the League of Nations. The secretary intimated that 28 new members had joined the organisation since the last meeting.
