UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

NATIONAL WORKERS* MOVEMENT The general meeting of the Dunedin Central Branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held on Tuesday evening. Cr M. Silverstone (president) presided over a good attendance of members and their wives. An important circular was received from the Minister of Employment, intimating that the complaints received from the organisation would be recognised by the Labour Bureau, and that the request for a maternity grant for expectant mothers had received sympathetic consideration from the Unemployment Board, which had instructed certifying ofiicers, on production of satisfactory evidence, to advance to their next higher conjugal classification the husbands of those women who were expecting to bo confined. The rise in status would take place three months before the date on which the birth was expected to eventuate.
