THE DEER MENACE
A NATIONAL PROBLEM CONTROL MEASURES URGED (Per United Press Association') WELLINGTON, October 23. A comprehensive scheme for the organised destruction of deer and other animals that do damage to forests was placed before the Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Alexander Young), to-day by a deputation from the New Zealand Forestry League and associated organisations. The deputation said the menace from browsing animals had assumed and dimensions of a national problem, and urged that £IO,OOO be set aside immediately to initiate control measures.
The Minister endorsed the deputation's remarks, agreeing that the destruction of the animals complained of was a national duty and must be undertaken on a national scale. He could not say that the sum asked for would be appropriated tins year, but he assured the deputation that the department was endeavouring to extend its activities.
