LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION

Even more interest than usual was shown in the business of the Otago Council at the meeting on Tuesday, for the agenda covered a wide field of -presentday problems with which the world is faced. A letter received from the No More War Movement drew attention to the history book in use for Standard V in the primary schools in New Zealand, the general teaching in which was stated to be out of harmony with the modern concept of historical truth and a friendly attitude towards other nations.—Action has already been taken by the Christchurch League of Nations Union, and the secretary (Mrs Denton Leech) was instructed to obtain full information from that branch, in order to co-ordinate with the No More War Movement in a deputation to the Minister of Education on his next visit to Dunedin. From the Peace Council in Christchurch a statement dealing with the internationalising of raw materials. —It was pointed out that collective security for nations could only be obtained by collective action in the distribution of the most important primary resources of the world, in the interests of various peoples. Tt was suggested that the League of Nations might set up a Permanent Economic Council to control economic activi ties' by international authority, coupled with guaranteed access to the raw materials for all nations.—Received. Farquharson wrote drawing attention to a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Cirristehureh City Council commending (lie efforts now being made to consolidate the strength of Ihc League of Nations. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., had recommended similar action be taken by councils and influential bodies throughout New Zealand, as such action would be helpful to the Government. —Received. The secretary's report showed that there had been considerable activity in the Otago branch. Twelve new members had been enrolled during the month. The council decided to hold meetings in the city clurinc the election campaign.
