HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

FOUR RECORDS BROKEN TIE IN SENIOR CUP STEADY RAIN MARS MEETING The Otago Boys' High School sports, which were held at Carisbrook yesterday, ■were marred by the unpleasant weather conditions which prevailed throughout the day. There was an absence of wind in the morning, but light, drizzling rain fell at intervals. In the afternoon, however, a light north-east breeze sprang up, bringing with it steady rain, which continued for the remainder of the day. Under such conditions it was not surprising that both the attendance at the meeting and the times in the actual races were affected somewhat, but, nevertheless, keen competition resulted in most of. the events. In the Senior Cup, however, only two boys—H, Stott and I. M. Chandler —faced the starter, and they met only twice in the course of the competition. Out of eight events each was required to enter for five, and after the 100 Yards and 200 Yards had been decided they had the other three events to themselves, Chandler entering for the High Jump, Long Jump and 120 Yards Hurdles, and Stott for the Mile, 880 Yards and 440 Yards. The result of an unsatisfactory contest was, therefore, a tie for the Senior Cup, each boy gaining 18 points. A. S. D. Geary, who had also entered for the senior events, met with a nasty accident while practising hurdling at school, which resulted in his scratching in all events. He struck a hurdle, the top bar breaking and entering the ground, and Geary spiked himself on the other end. The injury he received in his stomach required 10 etitches. Better competition was seen in the Junior Cup, for which, there were five entrants, and it resolved itself into a stern struggle between C. M'Gregor, an outstanding runner with an easy style, and H. A. L. Laing, an all-rounder. M'Gregor won the cup with a total of 16 points, Laing being six points behind. A. J. Alldred and A. Mutimer were equal third with 6 points each. Three records were lowered during the day, which was a highly creditable performance when the condition of the track and the driving rain are taken into consideration. Another record was bettered at the school prior to the meeting, and a further one was equalled. Two outstanding intermediate runners, C. M'Gregor and A. Duff, were responsible for two of the new records being established. In the 100 Yards Handicap, under 16 years, Duff ran a great race from the scratch mark to win his heat in the fast time of Usee. The record ■was held previously by'E. B. Little, who covered the distance in 11 l-ssec in 1929. Duff equalled his own record later in the day when the track had become much heavier. In putting up such a good time on a sodden track it appeared that Duff would be capable of lowering this record by ' a larger margin under favourable conditions. Duff also ?howed brilliant form as a sprinter in the 220 Yards Handicap under 16 years, in which he established a new record of 25sec, lowering the time of the previous holder, A. G. Wise, by a fifth of a second. Wise's record had remained unequalled for 11 joars. In the Junior Cup 220 Yards event C. M'Gregor, the champion, ran a brilliant race to win by several, yards in the. fast time of 24 l-ssec, which was an improvement of three-fifths of a uecond over the previous best performance, that of I. M. Chandler last year. The fourth record to go by the board was that in the Throwing the Cricket Ball event, which was decided during the week. A member of the school's first eleven, N. W. Colvin, recorded the excellent throw of 105yds Ift 3in. The previous record was established in 1909 by J. E. Cuthill, who threw the ball 101yds Oft ljin. In an attempt at lowering the Junior High Jump record on the school grounds during the week H. A. L. Laing succeeded in equalling the existing record of sft lin established last year by I. M. Chandler, a good performance for a boy under 15 years. The following are the results:— SENIOR CUP
