GIRL GUIDE NOTES

By Guideb.

CHIEF COMMISSIONER'S VISIT. The visit of Miss Herick to Otago last week was appreciated by various sections of the movement. The annual meeting, which has been reported elsewhere was one of the best attended we have had tor some years. Members of the executive combined business with pleasure when they met for afternoon tea with Miss Herrick next day and discussed matters of finance and administration in the movement. The films shown the following evening gave us an idea of world Guiding such as no amount of talking could do, and it is to be regretted that comparatively few Guides, or, for that matter, G aiders, took advantage of the opportunity of seeing them. Next day Miss Herrick travelled to Oamaru, and there saw the Brownies in the afternoon, and in the evening showed the films to a splendid turn-out of Guides, as well as members of the District Executive. Later she met executive and Guiders at supper with the division commissioner, Miss J. B. Wilson. TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY CUP On Thursday evening, at a campfire for Guiders, Miss Herrick presented the Handcraft Cup to the captains of the winning companies, Miss Helen Wilson and Miss Esma Wilson. At the same time she congratulated Miss E. Campbell on the winning of the Lone Banner by her company. In connection with this cup, it is to be regretted that the names ol two companies who entered were omitted from the list previously given. These were Tapanui and Ist Dunedin (Roslyn), both of whom sent in entries of very good standard. Ist OTAGO LONES. Three weeks ago we published a description of the entry of the Ist Otago Lones for the New Zealand Lone intercompany competition. Word has just been received that the Otago company has been successful in coming first, thug winning the banner. Congratulations to these Guides. DUNEDIN DIVISION SPORTS RALLY. On Saturday last, owing to the weather being unsuitable for holding the annual sports out-of-doors, the Guide rooms were the scene of much fun and activity, with an attendance of about 250 Guiders and Guides. Entries for the Division Sports Cup were received from the following companies:—Roslyn, Ist and 2nd Knox, 4th Dunedin, Musselburgh, Columba, Mornington, Anderson's Bay, South Dunedin, St. Andrew, St. Hilda's, Central Mission, 2nd Caversham, St. Clair and Macandrew This year a new idea was instituted, namely, that no company should know beforehand the games that were to be played for the cup. A sub-committee of Guiders was formed to draw up a programme and to demonstrate the live team games chosen. After this the games were run oil' in various heats, the team games being played in the small hall while the rest of the Guides were kept amused with games and races in the large hall? Among the judges were Miss D. G. Blackmore, division commissioner, and Mrs R. Chivers, district commissioner. A break was made at 4.30 for tea after which the finals were run off. The last part of the programme took the form of a campfire, at which the division was joined by Miss V. M. Barron, provincial commissioner, who conducted the singing, which went with a good swing, showing that the Guides were thoroughly enjoying themselves or, as the provincial commissioner remarked, " happy but not tired." At the close of the campfire presentations were made by Miss Barron of the trophies and prizes (the latter kindly presented by Miss Z. Hart).
