Sunshine Club's Excursion Much interest is being evinced in the excursion to Greymouth, Hokitika, and Lake Mahiuapua, which is being arranged by the Dunedin Sunshine Social Club for the Labour Day week-end. Already over 300 excursionists have booked for the journey, und the support being accorded the trip makes it probable that a second train will have to be run. From Greymouth a day excursion will be held to Lake Mahiuapua, passing Kumara and Hokitika on the way. The excursionists will leave Dunedin on Saturday evening and return early on Monday morning. Observance of Sunday Bishop Fitchett stated at the meeting of the synod of the Diocese of Dunrflin yesterday that he desired to thank one of the members of the synod who had. on the City Council, put up a fight for what they considered the proper observancp of Sunday. Bishop Fitchett, whose remarks were received with applause, was presumably referring to Cr A. 11. Allen. Gandhi Still Active " Gandhi is still a great force to be reckoned with in India, and of late has achieved remarkable results in his efforts on behalf of the masses," remarked Miss H. M. Rice, daughter of Mr F. Rice, of Napier, who has returned for a vacation in Napier after four further years' work in the interests of education in Bengal, India, tinder the auspices of the New Zealand Baptist Union. Miss Rice has been engaged in missionary work in India for the past 21 years, and on this occasion intends to spend 15 months in Napier. Recovered from Harbour A spectacle most unusual in Wellington was witnessed recently by people walking along the waterfront. It appears that a man lost a valuable watch in the harbour alongside a wharf, and called into service a well-known professional swimmer to recover it. Despite the fact that the water must have been 20 feet deep or more, and that the bottom was muddy, the swimmer recovered the watch inside seven seconds.

Effect of Gas on Tree* That trees as well as men can be killled by gas poisoning is illustrated- by the report of the Reserves Department presented to the Christchui'ch City Council on Monday night As a fine old plane tree in Cranmer square was dying it was cut down by the department, and when the trunk was removed it was found that the tree had been killed by gas poisoning, the report stated. There was evidently a leak from one of the nearby gas mains, and a second tree also appeared to be affected. Two trees in Moorhduee avenue near the gasworks, were removed last year for the same reason, and a third tree there was now dead. Cr J. W. Beanland said that when similar trouble occurred a number of years ago part of the cost of replacing trees had been borne by the Gas Company. A Salvage Fire Engine A new salvage motor car is to be pur. chased by the Wellington Fire Brigade. Last year the superintendent (Mr C. A. Woolley) recommended the acquisition of such a car, as it would make a good second engine to run out to the great majority of fires, instead of taking out the large engine with its big pump. This car would carry all kinds of extra equipment of service, both in fire suppression and in the saving of goods from damage. A vote was placed on the estimates for this year to procure such a car, and after some consideration the board has decided to call for tenders for the vehicle, which will be built to the board's specifications aft«r these have been approved by the ooard's electrical expert.
