WOMEN AND PENSIONS
TO THE EDITOR. SIE, —May I draw the attention of members of the Women's National Council and women in general to the injustice to women contained in the proposed national pensions scheme? "The inclusion of women is not favoured. ... A separate scheme will be required for females'"—" a separate scheme" whereby they will be deprived of benefits just as they are deprived of benefits under the unemployment schemes, while being made to pay their share in the country's taxation to the last farthing. When are these cruel and brazen injustices going to stop? Once married, a woman's position is by no means secure. Far from it. Rather does her need for provision and protection become more urgent. If a woman's insurances were handed to her at her marriage, in a good many cases she would get no peace until it was given over to her husband. It would then most likely be lost in some foolish venture or squandered in beer and cigarettes, while the husband himself would be well provided for. "The inclusion of women" is never " favoured "in benefit schemes in this country.—l am, etc., Fair Play. North Otago, October 21.
