KING EDWARD TECHNICAL COLLEGE

BOARD OF MANAGERS The meeting of the King Edward Technical College Board of Managers yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs L. Sanderson (chairman), T. Scott, J. T. Paul, H. H. Leary, F. L. Lawrence, H. H. Johnson, Mrs W. Herbert and Miss L. Sullivan. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting the chairman on behalf of tho board congratulated Mr Scott on having attained his eighty-second birthday. PRINCIPAL'S PvEPORT. The principal's report for October was as follows: The annual inspection by Messrs Eenyard and Wild took place during the period September 23 to 26. In general the inspectors expressed their approval of the progress shown in a number of the departments in the school, and took note of the improvements now in progress on the board's property, as well as of those projected for the near future. I ask the board's approval of the following special arrangements:— Thursday, October 24—annual athletic sports at Carisbrook; Monday, November 4—cross-country races at Balmacewen; October 30 to November 12— evening school examinations; November 20 to November 27—Technical High School examinations; Friday, December 13—Technical High School closing ceremony. It -is suggested that a meeting of parents be held as soon as possible for the chairman of the board to make explanation in detail of the programme of improvements in sites and buildings, and for the principal to give some explanation of the method in which the pupils' funds are administered. I ask that the board consider painting certain rooms during the Christmas vacation, in particular the staff rooms and the principal's room, and if possible two classrooms. The report was adopted. JOINT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Joint Committee was hcl.l in the principal's office on Tuesday, October 15, 1935. There were present Mr J. J. Marlow (in the chair), Mr F. L. Lawrence, Mr C. J. Hayward, Mr H. H. Johnson, and Mr H. H. Leary. After hearing reports of the separate committees the Joint Committee agreed to report as follows: — That Messrs Mandeno and Fraser had been instructed to call tenders for the erection of concrete walls. Tenders were expected to be in by Thursday, October 24. The principal had applied for an Unemployment Board subsidy of 10 per cent, upon this work, and it would be inadvisable to commence operations until the board replied. That word had been received from the Education Department to the effect that an Unemployment Board subsidy not exceeding 33 »l-3 per cent, might -be secured in respect of tho construction of a school gymnasium if the work could be put in hand by December 31, 1035. The committee had instructed the principal to reply stating that the work of building a gymnasium could not be'begun before December 31 even if the board could promise to provide two-thirds of the cost of erection. Unfortunately the board's heavy commitments for the immediate future prevented such a guarantee being given at the moment. That the committee was still considering the purchase of a toolroom lathe, and had reason to believe that a JonesShipman universal grinder might be secured at a reasonable price. No decision on either matter had yet been reached. ~-,,. That the committee had explained to the Y.W.CA. that it would be inadvisable to grant any rights this year over the board's tennis courts pending the completion of building opeiations on the upper two courts and the erection of a concrete wall near the lower one. The committee agreed to recommend: That the Executive Committee of the board be invited to make a thorough examination of the state of the college funds in order to decide under what conditions the school gymnasium might be erected. That accounts totalling £346 lis i)d be passed for payment. Approval of the usual salary payments was deferred until definite word should be received from Wellington as to the amounts actually payable to teachers for the month of October. The reports and recommendations were adopted.

ADDITIONAL ROOMS. The principal reported on representations made by him to the Education Department and to the High Schools' Board of Governors with respect to two rooms at the High School which could be used for a plumbing workshop at the Technical School. A letter was read from the High Schools' Board intimating that good use could be found for the rooms at the new high school at South Dunedin. Mr Paul stressed the special set _of circumstances which made the acquisition of the rooms necessary and suggested that the board should take the matter further. After further discussion it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the principal and chairman, the department and the High Schools' Board to be written to again in" the meantime. STAFF. Miss E. W. Durward wrote advising that she would be ready to resume her duties on the staff on February 1, 1036, after a year's leave of absence. Mr H. C. M'Queen was granted leave to enable him to undertake educational research work. Leave was also granted Miss C. M. Anderson for the purpose of • visiting northern centres.
