j Mr J. S. Jack was a passenger by yesterday’s express for the north, en route to Wellington. Mr E. J. Gihnour, of Invercargill, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. The appointment of Mr G. Russell as manager of the Port Chalmers gasworks was confirmed f.t last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. Mr S. M. Macalister, of Invercargill, travelled by the north express yesterday cn route to Wellington. Mr J. W. Becker, manager of the 1. and G. Mutual Life Society, was the recipient on Friday last of a handsome pair of field glasses from the staff on the occasion of his departure for Melbourne, to be present at the annual conference to be held there this year. Mr A. L. Adamson, secretary of the Southland A. and P. Society, was a passenger by yesterday’s express for the north, en route to Hastings to attend the Royal Show. Mr T. C. A. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington and leader of the Democrat Party, passed through Dunedin yesterday morning en route to Invercargill. He will visit Dunedin on Thursday. ' Mr T. F. Mackie, of Port Chalmers, left yesterday morning for Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rowing Association as the Otago Association’s delegate. Mr H. L. Gibson, district traffic manager of railways, and Mr P. H. Morey, district railways engineer, travelled from Dunedin to Ashburton yesterday to meet and accompany members of the Railways Board on a tour of inspection of the railway territory in Olago. There was a large congregation at ot. Mary of Angels Church, Wellington, when the Rt. Rev. Dr Jean Marie Aubin, S.M., was consecrated as Roman Catholic Bishop of the. Southern Solomon Islands. Archbishop O’Shea, Metropolitan of New Zealand, Bishop Whyte, of Dunedin, and Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch, were present at the ceremony. The consecrating prelate at the Pontifical Mass in the morning was Archbishop O’Shea, who was supported by Bishops Whyte and Brodie, with the Er. Rev. Monsiguor Connolly as assistant priest. Solemn Pontifical Benediction was held in the evening when Bishop Brodie delivered the sermon. __ Prior to their departure for New Guinea, Messrs W. Johnson and J. Wilkinson were met by a large gathering ot residents of St. Bathaus and the surrounding districts at a social held in their honour. During the evening Mr F. M. Pyle, on behalf of the residents, presented each of the guests with a cheque in recognition of his services to the district. He referred to Mr Johnson's association with the Domain Board, the School Committee, the Cemetery Trust and the various sporting bodies, and extended to him and Mr Wilkinson congratulations on being appointed to responsible positions in New Guinea. Mr J. D. Shaw, on behalf of the employees of the Kildare Consolidated Gold Mining Company, presented Mr Johnsen with a suitcase and shaving outfit, and, in doing so. spoke of the cordial relations that had existed betivceh him and the men during the past 14 years. Other speakers -were Messrs Macfarlane, Becker and James Enright. Mrs Johnsen was presented with a crystal flower bowl from the members'of the Women’s Division of the-Farmers’ Union, and a fruit bowl from the girls of the Junior Homemakers’ Club. Mr Johnsen was also the recipient of a gold wristlet watch from the directors of the Kildare Consolidated Gold Mining Company, Mr L. Gilchrist making the presentation.
