The Lovell's Flat Institute met on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Robinson, sen., presiding. The motto was “Nothing worth having is easily won,” and the roll call was “Sing, say, or a penny pay.” The competition for something made from a felt hut was won by Mrs Carruthers and Miss Clarke, first equal, with Mrs M’Queen and Mrs Kerr second equal. As the demonstrator was unable to be present the meeting took the form of a social afternoon. The hostesses were Mesdames Robinson, Robertson, and Robinson, jun. * :|< v The Awamoko-Georpetown Institute met in the local hall, Mrs D. Kennedy presiding. Final arrangements were made for the third birthday party. The roll call was, “ Spring Cleaning Hints.” The competition for six pikelets was judged by Mrs Hedges (Oamaru), the award going to Mrs Smart, with Mrs C. Fricker second, and Mesdames Aitcheson and Fricker (equal) third. Mrs Hedges gave a demonstration on the re-covering of a quilt, and answered many questions. She was accorded a vote of thanks, Mrs Fillinpham _ and Mrs Logan were hostesses. The social half-hour was spent in rehearsing items for the birthday party.

At the monthly meeting of the Waiwera South Women’s Institute Mrs D. M'Kcnzie presided. The motto was, “A lot of forethought saves a lot of afterthought." The roll call was, “ Spring Cleaning Hints.” A song by Mrs G. Stuart was appreciated. Cane tray weaving was demonstrated by Mrs A. Harris, of Clinton, who was accorded a vote of thanks. The competition, “A Plate of Puff Pastry,” was won by Mrs C. Stuart, with Miss K. Anderson second. The hostesses were Mcsdames W. Stevenson and Fox.

The Waianakarua Institute met on Saturday. Mrs G. Bugden presided. The motto was “A rolling stone gathers no moss,” and the roll call “My most disagreeable task.” The competition for a shopping bag made from a sugar bag was won by Mrs J. Rawcliffe with Mrs •I. Hutton, jun., second. Hostesses wore Mesdames J. Hutton, jun., and 1). Bugden. Mrs J. Rawcliffe was in charge of the social half hour.

Mi's Petrie presided at the meeting of the Kaitangata Institute on Thursday. The motto was, “The best is vet to come,” and the roll call. “My Most Embarrassing Experience.” Mrs M'Auley and her helpers were congratulated on the success with the bay in the Balclutha show, Kaitangata having gained second prize. During the social half-hour, Mrs Hadler conducted two interesting competitions. The demonstrator for the afternoon was Mr Parker, the Singer sewing machine export, of Balclutha. In the competition, “A Cushion Cover Costing Not More than One Shilling,” Mrs Watson was first, Miss E. Pilling second, and Miss F. Thompson third. Hostesses were Mesdames Charteris and Sutton and Missses M.'Kinney and Thompson.
