Mr J. B. M'Callum left by the express yesterday morning en route for Sydney. Mr W. G. V. Fernie arrived in Dunedin from Christchurch by the express yesterday morning. Mr Arthur Ellis left for the north by the express yesterday on the first stage of a visit to America and England.

Mr D. C. Macpherson left for the north yesterday morning on a business tour of the Dominion. He expects to be absent for about three months. ' Miss Gladys Moncrieff and Mr Gil Dech arrived in Dunedin yesterday and are staying at the City Hotel. Mr Justice Kennedy returned yesterday from Invercargill, where he presided at the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court.

A resolution expressing sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. E. Lane was passed at the meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce last night. '

Firth, who has been appointed New Zealand Trade and Tourist Commissioner at Los Angeles, was tendered a farewell dinner at Wanganui on Saturday, the Mayor presiding over a large and representative gathering. Mr L. J. Schmitt, manager of the Industries and Tourist Department, said that Mr Firth was one of the most brilliant officers the department had, and would be a success in his new sphere of activities.

Mr H. Holland, member for Christchurch North, who was injured in a fall recently, is making very satisfactory progress toward recovery at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch. Though he hopes to return to his home within a week or 10 days, he will be unable to attend the opening of the last session of the present Parliament on August 29. Ho will, however, probably be able to resume his seat in Parliament before the session ends.

Mr Peter Maclean, manager of the T'e Aro branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., has been promoted to the position of assistant manager of t- Wellington branch. Mr G. B. Cartwright, manager of the New Plymouth branch of the bank, has been appointed manager of the Te Aro branch, and Mr A. M. Nicholson, accountant of the Wellington branch, has been promoted to the position of manager at New Plymouth. Mr B. C. Fowler, sub-accountant at the Wellington branch, is promoted to the position of accountant, and Mr Edwards is appointed sub-accountant.
