Born in Hawick, Scotland, he went to South Canterbury in 1878. His residence at Bannockburn extended over 56 years. His first employment was in a coal pit, and later he followed mining for many years. He took a keen interest ifi the many activities of the district, the School and Hall Committees, and the Bowling Club, and was a staunch adherent of the Presbyterian Church. His wife predeceased him just on five years ago, and he is survived by one son and two daughters. Sale Yards The Mayor (Mr Roberts) is still particularly active in matters relating to the proposal for sale yards at Cromwell. Although nothing further has been done in canvassing for financial support, voluntary offers of subscriptions are still coming to hand. A pleasing feature is the oilers of stock for a sale should a date be granted. Although farmers state that their estimates are conservative, a yarding of 9000 has already been definitely promised. As many residents have not yet been interviewed, it is predicted by many that that number will be increased to beyond the five-figure mark. There has been a change during the past few days, as on Sunday and again yesterday morning cold squalls swept the southern slopes.
