MOSGIEL DEFEATS MAORI HILL j I \ FAST AND EXCITING GAME bp to Saturday only two teams were left in the running for the premiership, Maori Hill having a lead of one point from Mosgiel. Saturday’s game between these, teams was virtually a deciding factor in the premiership, and, by defeating Maori Hill for the second time this season, Mosgiel enhanced its prospects for the honours. Next Saturday it will meet Seacliff in the final game of the second round. Had Maori Hill yon on Saturday it would have been the premier for the* season. The games resulted:— Mosgiel . . I Maori Hill . . O Northern . . 5 Technical .. 4 H.S. Old Boys 5 Roslyn-Wakari 3 Mornington . . 4 Seacliff . . 2 POSITIONS OF TEAMS The following table gives the positions of the teams in the First Division:—^

MOSGIEL v. MAORI HILL The ground at Logan Park was in excellent condition for the match between Mosgiel and Maori Hill. A large attendance of spectators witnessed the game, which provided hard and exciting football. , Both teams, however, have displayed better football this season. Maori Hill’s finishing efforts were again poor, but M'Dougall earned wellmerited applause in bringing off two brilliant saves. As the result would indicate, there was very little between the teams. The teams were:—

Mosgiel.—J. M'Dougall, E. Skinner, R. Steven, A. Stenhouse, J. Truesdale, J. Williamson, G. Nicholson, W. Rogers, D. Fyfe, R. M'Lean, W. Steven. Maori Hill.—L. Holden, G. Taylor, J. Bayne, R. Gordon, A. Brown, F. Haldane, H. Balk, T. M'Cormack, A. Davidson, J. Dalziel, J. Little.

Winning the toss, Maori Hill took advantage of the freshening breeze. A misunderstanding occurring on Mosgiel’s left. Gordon slipped the ball up to Davidson, the centre sending over to Little, who shot weakly. Sound play by the Mosgiel halves held Hill, and an attack by Fyfe and Rogers brought Holden out to clear. Balk went away on the right from a goal kiqk. Skinner gave a corner, and a further corner followed, when Little again missed with a chance. A good cross enabled Brown to head beautifully. ' M'Dougall, however, made a brilliant save by punching out. Mosgiel went through on the left, M‘Lean touching in to Fyfe, who shot outside. Play was fast, with Mosgiel playing strongly against the wind. Balk sent in a long shot which M‘Dougall cleared, but Hill returned and Dalziel drove in a. fast shot which found M‘Dougall in position. Play was hard and keenly contested. Hill made use of the wind, but Mosgicl’s defence was sound, and, although several corners resulted. Hill could not penetrate. On one occasion Balk crossed dangerously to goal, but Little was too slow, his shot going for a corner. Mosgicl returned play upheld, W. Steven on the left going through until Taylor inhered. Haldane placed nicely to goal, but Davidson neaded past. Mosgiel’s left-winger was again prominent, beating Gordon and Taylor, but his centre was not up to accept the pass, and Bayne sent Hill away on attack. M’Dougall returned Dalziel’s drive, and a Mosgiel movement broke down when Fyfe failed to connect. Mosgiel now forced the game, Stenhouse sending Rogers and Nicholson away. The latter shot outside, but M‘Lean opened up further movements and Holden twice took

a risk in kicking clear shots by Fyfe and W, Steven. The Hill backs lifted the pressure, Brown sending his forwards away, and M'Dougall was at his best in saving shots from Dalziel and Haldane. With five minutes to go to complete the spell, Williamson missed badly and Balk whipped in an awkward shot which M'Dougall saved. Brown, Haldane, Dalziel and Balk made strong efforts to goal, but the Mosgiel backs stood up well -to the repeated attacks and half time ended with M'Dougall fielding a shot by M'Corraack.

Starting the second spell, Hill went close to scoring. Truesdale miskicked and Davidson cut in to place over the top. Mosgiel settled down and quickly changed play to Hill’s area, Fyfe heading in a good ball from M'Lean. Holden saved, but a smart return shot forced him to throw over for a corner. A further corner followed, when Bayne headed over a strong drive from - W. Steven, but .Haldane cleared strongly to Little. The latter was easily repulsed, and with Mosgiel keeping the ball moving Hill “ packed ” its goal. Rogers cleverly sent up to Nicolson, Taylor conceding a corner to clear. A tense moment for Hill was relieved when W, Steven shot past. Truesdale opened the way for Mosgiel’s score, sending in a high ball. Holden came out to clear, but M'Lean smartly returned up the centre. Fyfe flicked , trie ball, which glanced off Taylor into the open goal before Holden got hack into position. Mosgiel 1, .Hill nil. Although better play had teen shown by the teams during the season, it was fast, and exciting. Dashing play by Haldane saw Skinner’s clearance give Balk a royal opening, but the winger shot weakly and a little later he also placed a corner kick behind. Davidson made a breakaway from Brown’s opening, Skinner sending play well down to Hill’s area, and Nicolson shot over from two attempts. Hill forced another corner, and Williamson robbed Balk, to send his forwards away. Nirolsou headed well to goal, and Holden punched out. Mosgiel continued to press, Rogers showing cleverness in developing the attack on the right. Taylor, however, was defending well and sending upfield, but Balk and M'Cormack failed to make use of scoring chances. Hill was again hard put to it to hold Mosgield out until Gordon came through nicely with the ball, Dalziel receiving to send on to Little, who was ruled offside. Both sets of backs were clearing well, but Williamson was allowing Balk too much scope. Gordon sent play to the winger, and a fine cross saw Davidson kick ever when well placed in front. Play up and ,down without advantage to either side until Balk, again unwatched, received from M'Cormack, hut Davidson, who received the centre, was tackled by Skinner and forced to shoot past. Mosgiel came away on the right, the winger crossing a fine ball, which Taylor cleared well and sent up to Balk. This time the winger essayed a shot which M'Dougall turned across goal out of danger Hill was making great efforts to equalise, and with the halves forcing the play M'Cormack shot over. Mosgiel’s backs, were playing better than in the first half, and Holden was called on to save a shot froth Fyfe, and offside brought further relief. In the final stages Mosgiel was on top, and the game ended:—

Mosgiel .. '. .. 1 goal Maori Hill Nil Mr W. P. Smith was the referee. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS v. ROSLYN-WAKARI The match betweeh High School Old Boys and Eoslyn-Wakari was played on the Oval, which was on the heavy side, Roslyn being defeated by Old Boys for the second time this season. Old Boys.—Smith, Sutherland, Pickerill, Hamilton, Chapman Beal, Sharp, Groves, Ryan, Latimer, Romeril. Roslyn kicked off, the opening play being fast and fairly even. With the advantage of the wind, Roslyn kept Old Boys on defence for a period, but was unable to score. A break away by Old Roys was repulsed, and trom the clearance Welham secured, to open the scoring. Roslyn 1, Old Boys nil. Roslyn continued to make the play, and Weiham followed with a second goal, but before half time Old Boys attacked strongly, the movement ending in Ryan scoring and making the score: Roslyn 2, Old Boys 1. With the start of the second spell.

Old Boys played better, the scores being evened up with a goal by Groves. Old Boys assumed the lead when Chapman scored, but Roslyn rallied and Rutherford completed an attack by beating Smith. Both sides fought hard for the lead, and it was only in the last stages of the game that Old Boys dominated the play, when Roraerill scored twice, the game ending: H.S. Northern.—-Hall, Smith, Ruddiman, M'Hugh, Alcorn, Sutherland, Smith, Henderson, Peart, Anderson, Buchanan. The Technical forwards swung into action early, Jones finding the net from a nice passing move. Northern next penetrated the Technical defence, and, from a clearing kick, Sutherland dropped the ball into Technical’s goalmouth, Peart netting. After a spell of wild kicking and placing. Northern worked down tie left flank, where Buchanan crossed nicely for Henderson to head in. Faulty placing let Technical away,, and from a tussle in front of the goal Witchall evened the scores before half time. Early in the second spell Northern dominated the play, Addison showing up in defence. L. Smith eventually secured, however, to net. Technical followed quickly with a goal to equalise, Witchall being the scorer. Again. Technical was hard pressed, but the defence relieved. From a strong clearance Lindsay received dnd made an opening for Witchall, who placed his' team in the lead. Northern brightened up its play, the wingers crossing strongly, but the inside forwards missed the scoring chances until from a corner by L. Smith Peart scored off a partial clearance by the goalie. Making strong efforts to obtain the winning goal, Northern held the advantage, and a few minutes before time Peart again netted, making the final result: Northern 5 goals Technical .. .. • • 4 goals Mr A.
