GERMANY v. UNITED STATES STIRRING DUEL IN DOUBLES LONDON, July 23. Allison and Van Ryn (United States) defeated von Cramm and Lund (Germany), 3— ii, o—3, 5—7, 9—7, B—o. The Doubles provided a stirring duel, fought out at high pressure. The Germans, combining better, took the first set, but the Americans speeded up the second to even the sets. The Americans trailed 2—5 in the third set, but a vigorous rally enabled them to draw level. 5—5. Lund's cannonballs, however, gave the Germans the set. The fourth was a dour struggle. The Germans had two match points at 5—4, but Allison, serving magnificently, saved the game, in the fifth set all were patchy under the strain. The Americans led 4 —l. The Germans levelled, and had three match points at (> —5, but Van Ryn held the service, and Allison clinched the match with an ace.

The newspapers pay tribute to Cramm's chivalry when in the fifth set he intimated to the umpire that he hit twice, a fact of which nobody was aware, conceding, the point which would have given Germany 7—(i, the Americans eventually winning the game.
