OPEN AND NOVICE TOURNAMENT An open and novice boxing tournament was held in the Pioneer Hall last night, under the auspices of the Otago Boxing Association, before a large attendance. Mr Stuart Glendining, president of the association, was the master of ceremonies, Messrs R. Fulcher, Don Paterson, J. Kilmartin, and W. D. Wilson referees and judges, and Messrs S. Brown and T. Long timekeepers. NOVICE LIGHT-WEIGHTS.

C. Winter 9.9 beat G. M'Dougall 9.7. Both men fought with the greatest de- , termination in the first round, each scor- \ ing with good lefts to the face and rights to the body. The pace was kept up in the second round. M'Dougall doing well with liis left hand and Winter using an effective right swing to the body. M'Dougall forced Winter to a clinch just before the gong. The third round saw the men exchanging solid punches, Winter connecting with clean rights to the body and doing good work with his left hand. The referee did not have to call "break" once during-the bout. The crowd loudly Applauded a willing and close contest. J. W. Sainsbury 9.5 beat 0. Butler 9.7. Sainsbury was too strong for his opponent, and had him boxing on the retreat through the first two rounds. Butler was hanging on a lot in the third round. Neither boxer showed much science. '

Final. Winter beat Sainsbury.

Winter took things easily in the first round, but, nevertheless, connected with some heavy rights to the body. Sainsbury drove his opponent across the ring with " a good right to the jaw and then lefts and rights in the second round. Winter appeared to be feeling the effects of his hard first contest. The pair slowed up in the final round, but there was more strength in Winter's blows, and they were better delivered. NOVICE FEATHER-WEIGHTS. J. M'Quarrie 9.0 beat D. Foord 9.0. The first round was mostly marked by bad timing and missing. ■ A right swing to the head staggered Foord in the second round, and M'Quarrie commenced to. take the fight to his opponent. M'Quarrie outboxed and outfought Foord in the third round. NOVICE WELTER-WEIGHTS. B. Orange 9.13 beat G. A. M'Donald 10.7. M'Donald had the advantage of height, reach, and weight, and though Orange kept moving in he had a difficulty m breaking through the defence of his opponent, who was boxing coolly. Orange forced M'Donald to the ropes with fierce lefts and rights to the head commencing the second round, but was being propped off now and agdin with straight lefts to his face. Orange stuck to his tall opponent well in the third round and swung a good right to the jaw on several occasions. M'DouaM was too much inclined to use a propping left and stand fiatfooted, instead, of putting his body weight behindjiie blow Si. \ NOVICE HEAVY-WEIGHTS. L. Coughlan 12.0 beat J. Brown 12.7. The powerfully-built Coughlan bounced and danced all round the ring, diving in now and again to clinch. There was little damage done in the first round, Brown being conteni to let Coughlan come in to him. Coughlan bumped Brown to the floor commencing the second round, and shortly after connected with a solid left hook to Brown's jaw. Brown fell full stretch on his back, his head striking the floor outside the ropes, and was counted out. Coughlan is the champion middle-weight amateur wrestler of New Zealand. WELTER-WEIGHTS (OPEN). F. Pine 10.0 beat N. Mathewson 9.13. Mathewson kept close to his opponent in the first round and did most of the attack. Pine, however, was always ready to fight back, but neither man did much clean hitting. Mathewson kept boring in in the second round, but Pine was forcing him to break away ■ as the gong went. Solid infighting marked the_ third round, Pine doing the cleaner hitting. Final.

R. Campbell 10.7 beat F. Pine 10.0. Campbell rushed and pushed Pine all round the ring in the first round and did not pive him much chance to box. Clinching and wrestling marked the second round until Campbell connected with a blow to the stomach. Pine went to the mat and was counted out. BANTAMS (OPEN). W. Drew 8.0 beat B. Reeves (Kaitangata)' 8.3. Drew .proved himself a quick twohanded lijtter and showed more finish in his work than Reid. His footwork was also good. Drew was again smart with both hands in the second round, and, although Reeves was willing to mix it, the Dunedin man was always beating him to the punch. There were some solid rallies . in the final round, but Drew was too clever for. his opponent./ FEATHER-WEIGHTS (OPEN). L. Greaney 8.13 beat J. Craik 9.0. The first round was marked by open boxing, but in the second Greaney forced the fight, and used a left to the face with some effect. In the final round Greaney fought on gamely, but it was not a very attractive bout. LIGHT-WEIGHTS (OPEN). Final. J. Ramsay 9.7 beat W. Langley 9.8. Clinching, with little clean hitting, was mostly in evidence in the first two rounds. Infighting and clinching continued in the third round. Langley shook Ramsay with a right uppercut as the latter was coming out of a clinch in the i' third round. Langley showed little science, and his tactics bothered Ramsay. MIDDLE-WEIGHT (OPEN). A. G. Olsen 11.0 beat W. Thomson 11.3. Olsen jumped in with a left to the face towards the end of the first round, ajid followed up his attack with rights and lefts, the gong saving Thompson. The referee stopped the fight in the second round. Olsen is now getting into the veteran . stage, but he 'carries a punch in both hands. It will be remembered that Olsen, who hails from Port Chalmers, won a stirring contest many years ago in the old Alhambra Theatre in Dowling street. / MIDGET CONTESTS. R. Johnston and S.
