CYCLING NOTES

OTAGO PROFESSIONAL CLUB The Otago Cycling and Athletic Club held its second last race of the series of eight races for the Beale Cup on Saturday, when a good field of riders faced the starter (Mr J. Wilson). Ihe race was won bv the youngest member of the club (W. Marsh), who .was off the front mark, and who rode a very good race all the way. He was joined near home by K. O'Neill, another young member of the club, and these two boys had a good lace home. Marsh winning by two lengths. K. O'Neill has been a very consistent competitor since he started, and has been placed almost every time. He has been very unlucky in not having a win to his credit. G. Johnstone was the third man home on Saturday. He is riding better every Saturday, and it should hot be long before he will be crossing the line first. S. Riddell was the next man to finish. This rider seems to be taking a long time to get into form, but another race or two should help him, and he should be seen closer up with the front bunch soon. J. Kelly, a new member, who joined up with the club on Saturday, had his first race, and rode well to finish fifth. J. Finnerty had bad luck to get a puncture. He was riding very well at the time, and will, no doubt, win a race very soon. The Oamaru riders are training hard with the idea of taking part in the club's big race on September 14. R. Dickson, who finished fourth in the Waimate to Christchnrch race, is in good form, arid he ought to have a good chance. The two Elliot boys are training steadily. Other likely entrants will be B. Barns, P. Hansen, J. Ford, and J. Smart. Several club members will travel to Kaitangata on August 3 to take part in the new club's race, which is timed to start at 3.15 p.m. The race will be oyer a 30-mile course, which will be mostly through flat country. With the Dunedin Club's riders and the Kaitangata entrants a big field should face the starter, and, given a fine day, the race should be one of the best held there.

DUNEDIN AMATEUR CLUB An excellent field of 22 riders faced the starter in the Dunedin Club's race for the M'Lachlan Cup last Saturday. Again proving his riding ability, T. Faid produced a handy sprint to head a bunch of nine riders to the line. He is now getting the reward of steady training, and is the first rider to have two wins in succession. T. Guy finished second, half a wheel behind Faid, and showed improved form. He has had bad luck in previous races, and riders were pleased to see him so well up. Third place went to J. M'lvor, who finished close behind Guy. He lapped well with Faid. and gave the back-markers little chance of getting into the placings. W. Templeton was again well to the fore, and helped his co-markere along at a good pace. He sprinted well at the finish, and was just beaten for third place J. Henry rode well. considering that he was handicapped by having an injured arm. It is to be hoped that it will be right by next week. , M. Laws, A. Umbers, and J. Kilner all rode well, and just left their sprint a little late. . , J. Donovan is a plucky young rider, but is inclined to do too much work when he is taking laps. He should try and keep a little in reserve for the sprint. The scratch men again took the time honours. A. Fletcher sprinted well to beat C. Gilchrist by 30 yards, with G. Homer well back third. Fletcher ie getting fit, and is giving the other scratch men plenty to do. C. Gilchrist rode well, but seemed in lack of training. G Homer was again well back, and did not eeem to be trying. F. Hobbs and S. Laws rode well, and finished strongly. Hobbs was unfortunate in breaking his pedal when in a good position, and Laws found the pace a little too much for him. ... Next week's race will be a time trial from Green Island to Otokia and back.

KAITANGATA CLUB

The Kaitangata Cycle Club held a road race on Saturday afternoon under ideal conditions. Nine competitors started in the race, the distance being about 28 miles. J. Marshall was the scratch man and was conceding 9min 30sec to the limit man. On entering Stirling on the return journey Cameron, M'Caughern and Matchett were the leaders. The rest ot the riders were well back. On entering Kaitangata, M'Caughern, Cameron, and J. Matchett were still together, but at this stage M'Caughern started to make his final effort, fftid with a s:ood burst went away to win in good style from Comeron with a"ls lengths' margin. Matchett was third. The time taken to do the journey was lhr 17min, J. Marshall gaining fastest time.
