GOLF

By Divot. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY Otago.—Flag Match. St. Clair.—Four-ball Bogey. Weather conditions last week-end were ideal, so that local links were well patron ised bv members and visitors. OTAGO CLUB The spell of dry weather has been very beneficial to the links, and they are nowmuch drier than they usually are at this time of the year. The final of the Knock-out Competition ivas held on Saturday, when, after an interesting game, J. M. Sidey defeated C. P. Howden by 3 and 2. At the start Howden, who had to concede five strokes on the round, looked a likely winner, and. playing confidently, established a useful lead to be three up after playing four holes. Sidey was inclined to be shaky with his putts at first, but he soon settled down. As his game improved he was able jo use his handicap to advantage to wipe out the deficit, and. continuing to play steady golf, took the lead to win on the sixteenth green, where he was 3>up. This Saturday the match set down on the programme is a flag match, for which post entries will be accepted. MACANDREW BAY CLUB The Stapleford Bogey Match played recently by the Macandrew Bay Club over nine holes resulted in a tie between A. Stewart. H. J: Rackley and A. Hellyer, all of whom built up a score of 17 points. In the play-off A. Stewart was the steadiest, and proved the .winner. Both Stewart and Rackley have been performinp: consistently well during the season, and being favoured for the Club Chamcionship, to be played late in August. The Four-ball Bo<?ey on Saturday was won by N. Waugh and B. Deaker, who finished one down. As the conditions were ideal the general standard of scoring "in this, competition was disappointing ... HOLE IN ONE ,'. U.K. Aiteheson. distinguished himself during last, week by holing his tee .shot at the Chasing As this was done-on a week day there was not a great number to- share in the celebrations, but it is confidently expected that the club will have .an opportunity later in offering it's congratulation in a becoming manner to Aitcheson on his meritorious feat, ST. CLAIR CLUB The conditions were ideal for the Stroke Handicap and concluding.round for the trophy presented by Mr A B. Watt played on Saturday. This competition, which created considerable interest, consisted of three rounds of stroke play on handicap. L. A. Doolan, who was among the first dozen at the completion of the first two rounds, returned a splendid 63 net.on Saturday to win the competition with a creditable net aggregate of 212. L. E. Routledge, who was runnerup, had a score of 215. L. M. Satterthwaite. who led the field after the second round by five strokes, faded away in the final round. There was a number of very fine cards returned on Saturday, as will be seen by the list, but special mention must be made of A. Lawrence's fine card of 71—3—68. Lawrence's 71 was the best gross score of the day, and, as it bespeaks a return to form after a lapse, it is all the more pleasing. The best_net score in the seniors was that of G. Birrnett, whose card was The best' card <in the juniors was, of course, L. A - Doolan's •■ 81—18—63, but another good score deserving of a better fate was that of V. J. Ravenwood. who had a net 64. from a handicap of 24. The following are the leading scores, showing the net aggregate.' for the three rounds: — -''■■■/.

ST. CLAIR LADIES* CLUB On Tuesday the St. Clair Ladies' Golf Club held a Bogey Handicap. The weather conditions were pleasant, but good scoring was difficulty on account of the fastness of the greens. In the seniors tjie best score was 8 down, Mrs Taylor being the winner in this section. Mrs Strang won the junior event with 6 down. Next week there will be an L.G.U. medal competition. .

competition, has won the cup for several and is shaping well to retain that honour this year. Moihoua has won the B Grade competition for the past two years, but is unlikely to perform the "hat trick" unless the team can maintain its very best form to the end. Taieri has the lead at present and will not be deposed without a hard struggle. . . ■ - • - lii the B Grade there is keen competition, both technical .and Brighton being in the contest: for the first time. Brighton has the excellent record of winning every match so far played with 74 goals to its credit and only one against. Momona scored the odd goal. ■ AUSTRALIAN TOUR The following is the record of the New Zealand Women's team now touring Australia up till Tuesday of this week:— Julv 17, beat Newcastle, s—-nil. Julv 20. beat New South Wales 3—2. Julv 23. lost to New South Wales 4—l. Tuesday's game was the first in the Centenary Tournament, which will be continued at Melbourne to-day, when New Zealand will meet Queensland. On Saturday New Zealand will play Victoria,. West Australia on .Monday, and South Australia on Tuesday. • • Miss Ada Mackie (Otago) has been playing left-half instead of in her usual nosition at right-half, and has adapted herself well to the position. It is considered, however, that she would, do much better on the right, but the transposition of the other halves would probably have a bad effect. .'. . ■ DOMINION TOURNAMENT The Otago Association has decided not to send a team to the New Zealand Tournament, which is to be played at Gisborne this year. The association has spent about' fIOO a rear for the past five years sending tennis to the annual contest, and it was thought better to play representative matches at home and away in order to dive more nlayers a cbnnre.
