PREPARED SPEECH COMPETITION Prepared speeches on ■ current topics were the feature of the meeting of the Otago University Commerce Faculty ExStudents' Association, which was held on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance of members, and the president, Mr R. J. Cook, occupied the chair. Those present had received the. subjects of their speeches and had to give their oration in the time of five minutes. Most of the speakers showed a certain familiarity with the art of public speaking, their efforts being delivered with commendable fluency. Although most of the subjects dealt with questions of a serious nature such as " Unemployment Taxation," " The Italian Aggression To : wards Abyssinia," and " New Zealand Transport Problems," the humorous side was not neglected. The speeches were judged by Mr W. R. Brown, who said that he had. great difficulty in making his final decisions, although he stated that the speaker who had gained first place, Mr J. Harrison, well deserved the award. Tor the second place he bracketed four speakers, Messrs W. J. M'lnnes, R. Wilson, E. R. Grace and A. K. Ibbotson. Mr Brown was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his valuable advice and for his help in contributing towards a successful and profitable evening.
