AN INTERESTING COMPARISON

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Your issue of this morning presents some statistics that are of interest —of comparative interest. In relation to drunkenness in the community, it is shown that the convictions for drunkenness per 10,000 of the population fell away from 52.2 in 1923 to 26.7 in 1932 —that is, to one-half, in nine years. Again, the report of the Unemployment Board shows that the total number who are a charge upon the unemployment fund is 55,568, as compared with 60,633 a year ago, a reduction of 5065, or one in 12, for one year. This is even more gratifying progress. Unemployment is a great evil, but as it is apparently on the mend, why worry?— I am, etc., J. D. B. July 22.
