At least one Hawke’s Bay tramp appreciates the thoroughness of the police ‘ comb ” for the perpetrator of the Karamu murder, and of the fair and kindly treatment accorded by the members of the Police Force in the course of their investigations. He was first interrogated at Waipukutau, and was subsequently brought to Hastings and given lodgings for the night in a hotel. Closely questioned next day he was able to give satisfactory answers to questions as to his movements on the day of the murder. On ascertaining that the tramp wished to get to Dannevirke the police handed him a free railway ticket for his destination, and also arranged for him to be supplied with a meal.
