The Grand National meeting taking place at Riccarton is a time-honoured fixture, which ranks second to none in popularity, and, in fact, some claim it to be the most enjoyable sporting gathering of the season. It stands clear on the Racing Calendar, and attracts sportsmen from all parts of the compass in the country. This year owners have supplied excellent nominations for the principal events, for which acceptances are due on Friday of this week. Nominations for the minor events close on the same day. That good . three-year-old Kelly is in regular work at Ellerslie, but so far his tasks have been restricted to trotting and cantering. He has wintered exceptionally Well, and, although he has not grown to any great extent, he is bigger and more robust than formerly. Kelly,, one of the most improved horses trained at Ellerslie during the present season, is endowed with brilliant speed and is also a good stayer, of whom the best has yet to be seen.
