THE KENNEL

By Breeder. The notes appearing tn this paper every Tuesday morning under this heading are the Official Notes of the Otago Kennel Club. The Secretary (Whitcombe's Chambers) will be pleased to receive notes before Saturday of each week and to pass them on to “ Breeder ” for inclusion In The Kennel on the following Tuesday, also advertising material (For Sales, etc.) for Insertion at the foot of the column.

These are very busy days for tile secretary of the Otago Kennel Club and his staff. Entries for the forthcoming show are being received in large numbers from all parts of New Zealand, and dogs will be benched from as far distant as Auckland to the Bluff. The list of special prizes is a very handsome one and owners of the more successful dogs should leave the show feeling well gratified. A further attraction for exhibitors is the undoubted popularity and reputation of Mr J. Soler as a capable judge of all breeds. The executive of the club will be busily engaged during the coming week in erecting benches to accommodate over 200 dogs, and in decorating the halls. Two important functions in connection with the show—the annual ball, to be held on the first evening, and the Saturday afternoon entertainment for the children, for which already 800 tickets have been issued — promise to be outstanding successes. All arrangements in connection with these two events are now finalised. Members of the club are eagerly looking forward to August 2 and 3. All dog fanciers will be pleased to learn that Mr J. Booth, an enthusiastic member of the Otago Kennel Club, is about again and well on the road to recovery after his recent operation. lie informed me that he is Jooking forward with pleasure to the club’s coming show and intends benching his team of smooth fox terriers.

Miss Nicolson, of Dunedin, has secured the Scalyham terrier Aahfield Bodger from Mr G. C. Hayhurst, of Oamaru. Bodger is by Opihi Prince Serenade ex Harptree Dinah. Mr T. Blumsky, of the Wyndham Kennels, Papanui, renorts that he has disposed of two Scottish terrier dog puppies. Their sire is the well-known dog Scottish Mac and the dam is Mr Blumsky’s Wyndham Guess.

The cocker bitch Anne o’ Derby, the property of Mr C. W. Smith, of Christchurch, has whelped a fine litter of seven, three dogs and four bitches, to Derby Hooke. The latter is by that noted dog Avon Ability, while Anne o’ Derby claims as her sire Braevil Brill. Mrs G. D. Tonks informs me that she has secured from Mr J. P. Taucher, of the North Island, his Scottish terrier bitch ch Eatanui Lass (Aust.), by Aust. gr ch C ra '" Victor ex ch Craigmore Betty. Lass has the distinction of being the only champion Scottish terrier bitch in New Zealand, and has never been beaten in the show ring. Before coming south Lass visited Auckland on a stud visit to ch Sensational Necessity (imp.), the £SOO dog. Mrs Tonks has in her kennels at present a son of ch Sensational Necessity (imp.) and also a granddaughter of ch Eatanui Lass. Both these young dogs are entered for the coming Otago Kennel Club show. Mr Taucher in n letter informed Mrs Tonks that his Scottie dog Aust. gr ch Olympian Black Watch had now won his final points for his New Zealand championship.

Master Campbell Logan has acquired from Mr A. G. Betts, of Nelson, a rather line smooth fox terrier dog, Wakatu Darkie. This young fancier is going to show Darkie at the forthcoming show. Mr R. W. Brown, of Dunedin, has a pair of bull terriers landing this week from overseas. It is Mr p rown's intention to bench these new arrivals at the Otago Kennel Club’s show next month. Mrs Fraser, of Milton, had the misfortune to lose the little Pom. puppy she recently purchased. It was run over by a motor car. This is indeed hard luck ns the pup was one of the most promising I have seen for a long time. Mr George Bundy, of Christchurch, has disposed of an Irish terrier by Sir Robert ex I’m Alone to Miss D. Andrill, of South Otago, Mr D. A. Farquharson, of Signal Hill, the well-known breeder of working Alsasians, reports that he has disposed of pups by Acre’s Ekatere ex Queen Niobe of Cairnquhccn to Miss V. G. Wilman, Alexandra; Mr T. Harper, Forest Hill; Mr A. Sutherland, Bluff; Mr B. Beattie, Tapanui; Mr H. Gordon, Millers Flat; Mr A. Kinghorn, Shannon; and Mr W. Bell, Pine Hill. Most of these pups have been acquired for working purposes—either sheep, cattle, or gun. . , , The Collie enthusiasts of Christchurch have formed a Collie Club, with an initial membership of 20. The officers arc as ' follows President, Mr J. S. Chisholm; vice-president, Mr W. G. Robson; honorary secretary-treasurer, Mr W. H. Odell; committee —Mesdames W. G. Robson and W. H. Odell, Messrs G. Howes, D. Fcrgusson, Clark, and J. ,T. Nee.

SOUTHLAND KENNEL CLUB SHOW. The Southland Kennel Club’s second annual show held last Friday and Saturday proved a great success. There were 125 dogs exhibited, 34 more than for the club’s first show held last December. There were exhibitors from all parts of the South Island, the largest number coming, from Dunedin. The show was well patronised by the public, who were keenly interested in the fine display of well-bred dogs of all kinds. There was keen competition for the 27 special cups, prizes, and special trophies given by the specialists clubs in New Zealand. Alsatians topped the list, 16 being benched ; Collies came next. It being shown, followed by nine Labradors. The president of the club, Mr Robert Stout, and his executive had a very busy time and under their capable supervision the show was brought to a successful conclusion. An interesting feature was the presence of two brown retriever puppies which were not entered for any compotition. Their exhibitor, Mr J. Friend. iV the only breeder of brown retrievers in Southland and so attractive are these dogs that it is surprising that more dog fanciers do not’ keep them. . The whole of the judging was carried out by Mr H. Hinchliff, of Wellington. He stated that on the whole the dogs were of a very high standard. The entries were not as large as might have been desired, but lack of numbers was more than made up in quality.

The Judge’s Remarks Speaking of the individual classes, the judge said that the Pomeranians were of good quality, but badly out of coat. Tig-re were some very nice Sydney Silkies, while the only Pekinese shown

was a fine specimen. The smooth-coated fox terriers were of very high quality, though the entries were not high. The standard of the wire-haired fox terriers, on the other hand, was not so high. The Sealyhams were only fair, but tbe Scottish terriers were a fine collection throughout. So also were the West Highland Whites, followed up _by an outstanding dog among the Cairn terriers. High quality marked the Airedales; the Irish terriers were of very good type, but bad faulty ear carriage Though the English setters were typical of the breed some of them were not put down in the best of show conditions. The black cocker spaniels proved the best class of the show for all breeds, while the “other than black" entries were not far behind, both being of splendid quality. The Labradors were a strong class, very even in quality. There was one very good Borzoi and two promising puppies. The deerhounds were of a good type, but lacked show condition. The rough-coated _ collies brought out some of the best in New Zealand. The Alsatians were a strong class, being hard to separate, for quality was in evidence throughout. The judge said he received great help from the secretary (Mrs S. D. Stewart), the ring steward, and members of the executive. THE SPECIAL PRIZES.
