BUSINESS IN GREAT BRITAIN

REMARKABLE IMPROVEMENT NOTED A remarkable improvement in business conditions in London was the chief feature noticed by Mr A. F. Carey, Of Christchurch, during a visit of more than a year’s duration to Great Britain. Mr Carey, who returned on Friday, said m an interview with a representative of the Press that he had been profoundly impressed by the difference in the business tope of London during his recent visit from that prevailing when he was there four years ago. “ The difference was something wonderful,” he said. “Everything was unproving all the time. Balance sheets were far more equally and satisfactorily adjusted, cuts were being restored, and tne whole business world was better. After my last visit four years ago it all came as a very pleasing and enjoyable surprise. One indication of the improvement is that one large store took more than £190,000 in one day.” The manner in which the unemployed were being absorbed also impressed Mr Carey. There had', been a tremendous development in reading programmes, and the authorities were using unemployed labour for some huge projects. Two particularly fine roads had been constructed, the Great West road and the North Circular road. These had done a great deal to relieve traffic congestion, and now one could have a glorious drive through London on the new roads. The authorities believed that by building roads the best use was being made of the unemployed labour, and they were going to concentrate on this development, so much so that they were going to spend between £13,000,000 and k 15,000,000 in building another road of The same type as the North Circular road, further from the centre of the city.
