MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr J. 13. Wootton) occupied the chair. COUNTRY TRIAL MATCH. It' was reported that the following team would represent the northern sub-unions in the trial match to be played at Alexandra bn Saturday against the Southern Sub-union’s team; — Full-back, Campbell (Vincent); three-quarters—-Gibb (Maniototo), Sutherland (Vincent), M’Skimming (Maniototo); five-eighths, Morrison (Eastern Districts), Arnold (Vincent);' half-back, Davies (Eastern Districts) : forwards— Renton (Vincent), O’Reilly (Eastern Districts), Chapman (Maniototo), Parkhill (Eastern Districts), Clearwater (Eastern Districts). J. Donelly (Vincent), 1 Becker (Maniototo), Davis (Maniototo). Reserves, Inder (Maniototo), Hamilton (Vincent). JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE GAME. A letter was received from the Canterbury Union stating that it had decided to discontinue the holding of junior representative matches against Otago. It would, however, be prepared to fulfil its engagement this season against Otago at Canterbury. It was decided, in view of the letter from the Canterbury Union, that the representative match be not played this year, and that the competition be discontinued.

Mr D. M. Stuart moved that the union communicate with the Southland Union and endeavour to inaugurate a junior representative competition, the game to be played either at Invercargill or Dunedin as a curtain-raiser on the occasion of the senior interprovincial match. The question at which town the first match should be played to be decided later on, the Southland Union to decide. Mr D. C. Jolly raised the question of arranging junior representative matches with country teams. He thought that they should consider their sub-unions first. ... In the discussion which ensued it was stated that country trains would be too big and strong for the Dunedin juniors. Mr Stuart’s motion was carried, Mr Jolly and Mr Douglas Spedding dissenting. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ TEAM. It w f as decided to ask Mr W. Duff to act as the union selector for the primary schools’ team, in conjunction with selectors from M'Glashan College and Christian Brothers’ College. The team selected will play against Southland. ORDERED OFF. N. D. Tilley, the referee in the match between Zihgari-Richmond and Southern, played at Carisbrook on Saturday, wrote stating that he had ordered off R. Edwards, a member of the Southern Club, for striking an opponent, I. Burns, with a “rabbit” punch. About 10 minutes previously he had cautionW Edwards for using ob’Scene language to him after ho had penalised him for an infringement. He realised now that it was an error of judgment on his part in not ordering Edwards off. He had always, however, known Edwards ns a decent, clean-living, and clean-spoken fellow, and he had been really surprised to hear him use the expression, and ho had issued a severe caution. He had also cautioned 1. Burns for adopting a fighting attitude. The referee and Edwards appeared before the committee. Edwards admitted using (he bad language. but denied that he had directed it at the referee. The chairman said that they must take the referee’s word in the charge, The referee was the sole judge of fact. Mr Tilley reported that it had also been brought to his notice that, when Edwards was leaving the field one of the line umpires, 11. Palenski. had walked on to the field and had shaken hands with him. Had he noticed this, he would have had Palenski removed fdr a grave dereliction of duty. When he had come into the dressing room he had been greeted ■with a flow of obscene language from Palenski. It was stated that Palenski was a referee and had been appointed a line umpire by the Referees’ Appointment Board. , , , A letter was received from the Referees’ Association stating that Palenski had been suspended by the association until an inquiry could be held by the committee, the members of which regarded his action as a serious dereliction of duty. , , It was pointed out that the Referees Association had only acted on the offence of shaking hands with Edwards. It had had no knowledge of the language which the referee had reported ns having been used to him in the dressing room. It was decided to forward a copy ot the complaint regarding the obscene lango age alleged to have been used to the referee to the executive of the Referees

Association. There was really, it was stated, a second charge against Palenski. The matter will come before the union again after the inquiry by the Referees’ Association. The committee then dealt with the charge against Edwards. Mr Harris moved that Edwards be suspended till the end of June, 1936. Mr J. Mitchell moved as an amendment that Edwards be suspended till the end of the 1936 season. , The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder and the’motion was carried without dissent. It was decided to place Burns s name cn the cautioned list.

HIGH SCHOOL TOURING TEAM. Permission was granted the High School first fifteen to travel to Christchurch on July 27 to play the annual match with Christ’s College. Permission was also granted the team to travel to New Plymouth in August to be present at the jubilee celebrations of the Taranaki Union. ALL BLACKS’ SEND OFF. Mr Wootton was appointed to represent the union at the dinner to be given to the All Blacks at the Grand Hotel in Wellington on o.Jy 30. OBJECTION TO REFEREE. S. R. Inglis, hon. secretary of the Southern Football Club, wrote as follows: — “ I am. instructed by my committee to advise you that we have no confidence in Mr Tilley as a referee, and we do not wish him to be allotted to any match in which any of our teams are taking part in the future.” Mr Harris said that teams were expected to play under the referee appointed . by the Referees’ Appointment Board. He pointed out that no charge had been made against the refeee. It was decided to receive the letter. SOUTH TUAPEKA APPEAL.

An appeal was received from the Tuapeka Mouth Football Club against the decision of the South Tuapeka Sub-union in extending the time of the game played between the Tuapeka Mouth team iind Waitahuna on Saturday, July 6. The score was 5 points all at the time. The extension of time was decided on, it was stated, despite the, protest and voting of the Tuapeka Mouth delegates, and further a vote had been recorded for whom no proxy was held. During the extra time played Waitahuna had scored a try and had won the game by 8 points to 5 points. The Tuapeka Mouth Club asked that the game be replayed. _ It was decided to submit the appeal to the Appeal Committee (Messrs Cavanagji, Harris, and Wootton).
