Mr F. H. R. Nevill travelled to Oamaru by the express yesterday morning. Mr J. T. Gillan left for Christchurch by the express yesterday morning. Air G. W. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Mr R. Coulter has beeii selected as the Labour Party s candidate for Waikato. Mr Coulter is Mayor of Te Aroha. an office -which he has held for 14 years. At last night’s meeting of the Dunedin City Council, Cr M. Silverstone was appointed to represent the council on' the Ocean Beach Domain Board in place of the late Mr J. B. Shacklock. Mr H. S, Barns, acting-manager of the Christchurch branch of Dalgety and Co., has received advice of his appointment to the managership of the firm’s business in East Africa. He will be stationed at Nairobi, Kenya. Reference to the death of Sir Charles Holds'worth was made by the retiring piesident (Mr C. B. Barrowclough) -at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce last night. Sir Charles had been a member of the chamber for many years, said Mr Barrowclough. and had left an honoured name. Members stood foi a moment as a tribute to his memory. The annual report of the Christchurch Bowling Centre extends sympathy to the Dunedin Centre in its loss through the death of Mr E. T. Falconer, a past president of the Dunedin Centre, and a member of the New Zealand Bowling Association.

At last night’s meeting of the Management Committee ■of the Otago Football Association reference was made to the earlv departure to Australia of Mr J. B. M'Callutn, who had served as chairman of the committee for several seasons. It was decided that a letter of appreciation i>e sent to Mr M'Callum thanking him for. his past services to the game and wishing him success in the future. The St. Kilda Borough Council, at its meeting last night, decided to forward to Mr James Dixon a letter of congratulation on his work as conductor of the St. Kilda Municipal Band. The Mayor (Mr H. H. Leary) said that Mr Dixon was worthv of such recognition, as he had obtained excellent results with the band, and. although he had retired from the position of conductor, he had stated that he would always take an interest in the combination. Before commencing the business of the Dunedin Drainage Board last night, the chairman (the Rev. E. T. Cox) referred to the death of Mr J. B. Shackloek, who had, said the Mayor, rendered long and distinguished service to the city, both as councillor and Mavor of the city, and in many other ways. His life was filled with private, business and civic activities. On the Mayor’s suggestion a motion of condolence wag passed, those present standing as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased. With a distinguished career in the Congregational Church of Australia and a long record of community welfare work the Rev. Arthur C. Nelson arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi yesterday to take charge of the Beresford Street Church there. The new minister, who is succeeding the Rev. A. V. Whiting, will be inducted on Thursday. Mr bielson is accompanied by his wife and son. Mrs Nelson is a great granddaughter of the Rev. Mathew Henry Dodge, founder of the Port Adelaide Congregational Church, and is herself a keen worker in the interests of the Congregational Church. Several important promotions in the Lands and Deeds Department are announced. The retirement of Mr W. P. Morgan, district land registrar in Dunedin, has made several transfers necessary. Mr G. H. Seddon, district land registrar at Gisborne, to be district land registrar at Dunedin. Mr H. 0. Govan, district land registrar at Blenheim, to be district land registrar at Gisborne. Mr C. L. L. Harney, assistant land registrar, Christchurch, to be district land registrar at Blenheim. Mr C. J. L. M'Cree, senior clerk. Christchurch, to be assistant land registrar. Christchurch. Mr W. V. Morton, Wellington, to be clerk at Christchurch. Mr W. E. Bain to be transferred from Napier to Wellington.
