DRAINAGE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Drainage Board was held last night, the chairman of the board (the Rev. E. T. Cox) presiding. WORKS COMMITTEE. The adoption of the Works Committee’s report was moved by Mr J. W. Muuro, who said that the proposal in respect to additional drainage in South Dunedin was to put a much larger sewer through the old Caversham tunnel to relieve the Cargill road sewer. _ _ Cr Jones said that the City Council was partly responsible for the blocking of natural watercourses and drains during floods to the extent that a large quantity of screenings was washed from the roads into the drains. At the Glen there certainly had been blocking of drains as a result of this. He expressed the opinion that the proposed drainage in South Dunedin was urgently necessary. Cr Munro said that people who built houses in places likely to be flooded took a certain risk, and no doubt obtained a cheaper property on that account. When the Wilkie road sewer was extended past the Glen road he felt sure that flooding in that area would not take place. A small sum, he mentioned, had been granted to recuperate one property owner, without prejudice to the board, for the damage that had been done by the flooding. FINANCE COMMITTEE.

The Finance Committee’s report was adopted without discussion.
