KAIKORAI BAND

SUCCESSFUL CONCERT Before a large audience last evening, the- Kaikorai Brass Band, under the direction of Lieutenant 11. J. Osborne, gave a pleasing performance, Mr Osborne had selected a varied programme of items, and, judging by the applause, the requirements of a mixed audience were amply fulfilled. Two bright marches, " Fighting Mac " and " Old Comrades," were well treated, although, had the distinctions in tone been marked, the general effect would have been improved. The " Scottish Memories" selection was a popular one, and in it, as in the overture, " Spanish Carnival." evidence was given of careful training, of the solo and first cornets being particularly pleasing. In the waltz " Crown of Beauty" a splendid rhythm was maintained throughout. A fox trot, " Moonlight River," completed the band programme. The assisting artists were nil well received. Hiss Ruby Price (vocalist) was heard to advantage in "My Hero" and "Smiling Through." Miss Mavis M'Cormack (violinist) played Monti's celebrated " Czardus," aud, as an encore. "Auld Scotch Sangs," by Murdoch. Mr S. Kingston (baritone) gave a popular rendering of "The Open Road," and responded to a recall with " The Old-fashioned Town." Bandsman Ralph Hall's trombone item, " Love Maketh a Fairy Garden,'' found favour with the audience, and Bandsman Peter Glenn played as a cornet solo the "Carnival of Venice." Master Glenn at the last band contest was the winner of the New Zealnnd tenor horn junior championship, although he was then only 12 years of age. He has only recently changed over to the cornet, and in his performance of this difficult solo he showed considerable promise. His encore number was " The Flower that Bloometh."

The accompaniments were skilfully played by Mr Alf. Peftitt. The chairman was Mr A. Hanna.
