CANADA AND JAPAN SURTAX ON IMPORTS (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) OTTAWA, July 20. (Eeceived July 21, at o p.m.) The Prime Minister (Mr R. B. Bentiett) has announced that the application by the Japanese Government of 50 per cent, surtax to cerain Canadian imports, including lumber and wheat, would be considered a violation of the AngloJapanese Treaty of 1011 to which Canada became a signatory in 1913. Canada would reply with a 33 1-3 ud valorem surtax on Japanese goods. Further negotiations are in progress.
