SATURDAY'S MATCHES

TECHNICAL OLD BOYS v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS A

Technical Old Boya were unable to field a full team for the match against High School Old Boys A at Tonga Park en Saturday, but the nine players who took their places were sufficient to win the game. Old Boys played one of the poorest games of the season and certainly the poorest game this side has played in a long period. The forward line was especially poor, and there was a general lack of team work.

From the commencement, Technical took up the attack and in a series of strong rushes which swept aside the opposition gained the circle, where Grant opened the scoring. Within a very few moments similar tactics, again proved successful, and Mayston added another goal. Old Boys strove hard to retaliate, but poor combination gave the defence an easy task and Technical returned to the attack. /Brebner and Tyrrell were kept busy, but neither cleared - quickly enough nor with sufficient accuracy, and Technical lost no time in reorganising the attack. Before the spell was half over Mayston found another opportunity of scoring and Technical then had ,a three-goal advantage. Just before half time Old Boys became dangerouß for the first time, several scrambles in the Technical circle presenting opportunities which were riot accepted. Early in the second half Old Boys took up the attack, and from that stage held a territorial advantage. Their positional play and shooting failed to improve, however, and the forwards appeared utterly unable to finish off a movement. On a number of occasions, mainly as a result of Roberts's good play, the forwards were sent to Technical's circle, and eventually, from a scramble Hanning pushed the ball in, for Old Boys' only score of the day. Old Boys kept up the pressure for the remainder of the spell, but could not penetrate the defence. Towards the end of the game Mayston made a spectacular solo run practically the length of field, but Gallon came' out to meet him and was successful in clearing. The game ended with the scores:— Technical Old Boys .. 3 goals. High*School Old Boys A 1 goal. Messrs A. H. Wheatley and W. M'Queen were the referees. UNIVERSITY A v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS B

In a match between University A and High School Old Boys B, which are the top and bottom teams respectively in the First Grade competition in Dunedin, the former scored a narrow victory against their very much improved opponents, the result being two goals to one. School attacked quickly from the initial bully, but Wadham cleared to Hubbard, who centred bard to Walton. Bickerstaffe was prominent in the circle with a flick shot which was successfully stopped by the goalie, but a few moments later Cawkwell scored. University attacked again but a sudden repulse saw. JJercus called upon to clear from the University goalmouth. The ball travelled quickly to Walton and Eaton, whose attacking was always dangerous. Otway (centre forward) made a brilliant run right through to the circle, Hercus alone offering any defence. Johnston, however, followed in smartly to score for Old Boys. The Blue forwards kept pressing, and Cawkwell scored from a corner'. Play continued to swing backwards and forwards, and Cawkwell twice attempted to score. School retaliated, but M'Kenzie and Wadham were safe. Another University forward attack was unfinished as half time came.

University went immediately to the circle, where a, shot was stopped by StiirL'eon. Williams broke through, but University returned, Eaton shooting high and Sturgeon giving a corner by clearing with his hands. The students kept the ball away from the Old Boys hy their hard hitting and their good combination. Otway sent Williams away, however, who failed to finish off. Cambridge and H. Tyrrell played a fairly sound game in the fujl-back line, although the latter player was inclined to give penalties. A right.wing attack was almost successful for High School, Donovan just missing. Although they reached the circle on more than one occasion they failed to finish off. Cawkwell dribbled the ball away nicely, and a corner followed. Walton, who had an injury to his leg, was replaced by Hobson. From a corner the Hieh School forwards took the ball the entire length of the field. Cawkwell centred to Hubbard and Bickerstaffe, but they were too slow in connecting before an open goal-mouth. Headed by Weir, School attached just on time.
