HARRIERS

CIVIL SERVICE CLUB Under the control of Deputy Captain P. G. Spepce and S. T. Roes, 15 members of the Civil Service Club, who are in training for the road races, went tor a non-stop run from the North-East Valley School to the bridge past the Leith Valley School and back. A steady pace was maintained on the outward journey, and in the long run home from the turning point, W. Mackinnon was first, followed by his younger brother and N. Coutts. The No. 2 pack, under the control of H. J. Tyrie, followed a course up Bethune's Gully, and cut across from 200 yards below the Brown House to the top of Signal Hall. From the top of the hill a steady pace was maintained across the paddocks back to the school. Twenty-one members comprised the pack, and in the run home I. Herbison was first, followed by T. Toner and E. Asher. HANOVER BAPTIST CLUB ' The Hanover Baptist Club held its weekly run from the South Dunedin Baptist Church, about 17 members turning out under the whistle of Captain H. Benfell. The pack ran down Bay View road and.on to the Portobello road. Thfs was followed for about five miles. Just before Macandrew Bay was reached the trail led up on <to the top of the hill at the base of the new radio construction. At this juncture A. Young was,running particularly strongly, and a fast pace was maintained until "about a mile from the Anderson's Bay terminus. Here two packs were formed, and the* slow one set off and followed the road around the base of the lagoon, and so along Musselburgh Rise and down Bay View road, to finish in a bunch. The fast pack went a slightly different route, diverging from Musselburgh Rise to. go into ' Rayekton street. It ran along Bowep street into Queen's drive, and along Begg street, to finish in a bunch at the end of Bay View road. •

MORNINGTON CLUB Twenty members of the Mornington Club were present for the run from the Anderson's Bay School. Deputy Captain Burton led the pack along the top road at a steady pace for a good distance, when the trail led up to the monument. Leaving this, the pack again made for the road, which was then followed until the turn was made across country to the new wireless mast. From here the pack continued down towards the coast until the road was reached, when a small team, consisting of those training for the road races, set off on its own. This pack followed the road down to Smaill's Beach and back through Tomahawk, and so to the school. Hall was running very easily, and moved away over the last mile to reach home some. 300 yards ahead of Taylor, Webster, and Sanders. The other pack followed across country until it reached the same road. In the rnn home Munro was first, followed by Graveeon and Maitland. CAVERSHAM CLUB ' There was an attendance of 23 at the Caversham Harrier Club's run from the Kaikorai Baths. The first pack, under the charge, of R. S. Abernethy, had an enjoyable run of about six miles. Leaving the baths, the pack ran ud the zigzag to Helensburgh road, and branched off across country to Halfway Bush and on to Brockville road, and then back home , through Fraser's Gully. There was no run in.

The other pack, under S. Bartletfe (deputy-captain), ran about seven miles on thjß roads in preparation for the coming road season. The trail led alone; Kaikorai Valley road to»Buraside, and turned along'the Main South road, Elgin road, English avenue, and Stone street. A run-in was beld from the. Woollen Mills, along the Kaikorai Valley road and Fraser's road, a distance of about half a mile. G. L. Austin being first, G. R. Colston second, and R. C. Knox third. LEITH CLUB The Leith Harriers ran as guests of Mr and Mrs J. H. G. Clarke, of Malvern street, Woodhaueh. The run was held from the Holy Innocents' Schoolroom, and weather conditions were excellent. A good muster of members assembled for the run, which proved one of the most

enjoyable of the year. Captain H. Masters and Deputy Captains Thomson and Anderson controlled the pack, which was led for a short distance up the -Leith Valley road and ithen across the Leith and up into the hilly country bordering'the* valley. The ideal rolling country encountered provided excellent going, and a fast pace was maintained. The trail led through bogs, ditches and bush until the road was reached. Along this the pack proceeded at a fast pace for about a mile, when another detour through rough ground led on to the main road just below Sullivan's dam.. After a short rest at the dam a run round the track was held, the going being perfectand the run developing into more or less a race. Two packs were formed down the mrfsn, road, the fast pack going ahead and holding a <rood solid run. The run home resulted in S. King's heading S. 'Peterson and K. Watson.' The slow pack followed more leisurely, A. Murray leading S. Avent and W. Thomson in a short run, home. After the run the harriers were entetained at a very enjqyable tea.

ST. KILDA CLUB The St. Kilda Club's Past and Present Members' sports fixture at Hancock Park was held under ideal weather conditions,' and a large number participated. The president (Mr A. E. Rosevean expressed his pleasure in seeing so many old faces, and wished them every success. The Half Mile drew a large field, L. Johnstone and Ai Carter leading the field after 440 yards were covered. A. M'lntyre however, went to the front when the straight was reached to win easily from L. Dickison and A. Carter. The various events resulted as follows:—High Jump—Woltersdorf 1, Ross and Sabiston (equal) 2. Broad Jump—R. E. B. Johnstone (past member) and Woltersdorf (equal) 1, L. R. Johnstone 3. Shot. Putt—R. I. Dodds L (past member), G. Sabiston. 2 (past member), B. Watson 3 (past member). Among the past "members who were present were the Rev. R. T. Dodds, the Rev. C. Brown, Messrs C. Brady, G. Eccles, S. Hitchcox, J. Dunn, R. Watson, R. Johnstone, C. Bissland, A. M'Donald, Jack Auld, T. Thorburn, G. Sabiston, A. Smith, Len Hitchcox. ST. PATRICK'S CLUB / The pleasant conditions on Saturday helped to make the weekly run of the St. Patrick's Club a very enjoyable one. Starting from the St. Patrick's School, the first pack, under the whistle of "Deputy Captain Greaney, ran over the foreshore heading for Waverley, where some excellent running was indulged in. The pack travelled as as the new 4YA station, and the home trail passed down to Smaill'a Beach, then along the Tomahawk road.' The run home resulted in a win for C. M'Docnell, who was followed by T. Ryan, and a few yards back, J. _ Woods. The second pack, under Captain Scott, ran as far as Macandrew Bay, and a very slow run home saw the pack well bunched.
