RICCARTON NOTES

(Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, July 20. A large number of horses were on the scene at Riccarton this morning. The outside of the trial grass track provided good going, but the work on the Hat did not arouse much interest. A few horses sprinted, Knockfin dashing over half a mile smartly along the back, while Friday Night and Glenavon showed to advantage in half a mile down the straight. Most of the galloping, however, was done without any special desire for record breaking. Several of the trainers were again out with their yearlings, who ran along, mostly in pairs, over about a furlong and a-half.

Chief interest in the morning's proceedings was provided by the jumpers,

There was a lot of schooling, but it was of a mixed character. Radiant Rose (W. Lawson) was the first of the jumpers to appear. • She went over four hurdles safely, but at a slow pace. Vitaphone (G. Barr), Isadore (R. Drinkwater) and Olive Smith (G. Murfitt) went out together for a school over four hurdles. Vitaphone dashed to the front, and after hitting the first flight, he gradually increased his lead, while he jumped with great dash. The other pair, going more steadily, did not pleas-3 yo much in their jumping, though they cleared the last flight together in good style.

Joppa (G. Murfitt) and Nocturnus (H. Brown) started off together in front of Giggleswick (H. Turner) for a round of the hurdles. Joppa gave an attractive display, at a solid pace. Nocturnus, after jumping the first flight well, lost his rider at the second. Brown did not lose the reins, however, and Giggleswick waited till he remounted, the pair gojng together over the last two obstacles, which they jumped slowly but safely. Brown's performance was very creditable, it being his first experience in a school. Polydora (H. Turner) and Jolly Beggar (R. Drinkwater) attracted attention when they went out to school over six hurdles. They kept together all tiie way, making no mistakes, but Polydora jumped more carefully than in some of her earlier schools.

Aberfeldy (M. J. Bayley) and High .Speed (H. Turner) were companions over a round of the steeplechase fences. They were together all through an attractive display. Aberfeldy showed that he was a proficient jumper over country, and though he has been oft' the scene a long time, he may win a steeplechase before the winter campaign is concluded. Starlight (R. Drinkwater) and Fiom (H. Turner) went out to school over eight steeplechase fences, starting at the top of the straight. Starlight went fast and straight at each obstacle, giving a good exhibition. Fiom's display, on the other hand, was disappointing. She ran about at most of the fences and ran off several times. The first time she went off at the second of the double. Going round again, she missed the fence at the top of the straight and repeated her former mistake fat the second of the double. Turner took her back to the double, but once more she refused to face the second leg. Prince Val, who had fallen twice when racing at Trentham, was sent out for some education. Ridden by W. Lawson, he refused resolutely to jump the pony hurdles, even when Valpeen gave Uim a lead. His owner, Mr G. Campbell, then took the mount, with no better results. Later, with the owner in the saddle, he was tried in the jumping ring and he refused several times before he could be induced to jump. Then he was taken out and with Valpeen alongside him he cleared the pony hurdles. He afterwards jumped them alone, winding up by going over one of the big hurdles satisfactorily. The finish of the morning's education was a reward for the patience shown by the owner.
