CHESS
DISTRICT TOURNAMENT * The final match of the first round of the district chess tournament was played on Thursday evening at the Otago Chess Club rooms, when Dunedin South met Dunedin West, the latter team winning by four games to one. The following are the details: — South. West. A. E. Ward .. OG. D. Wright .. I J. Dawson .. IG. W. Reilly .. 0 C. R. Watson .. OW. W. Avery .. 1 A. C. Hall .. 0 T. M. Gillies .. 1 K. M. Stevenson 0 R. W. Lungley 1 1 4 A total of 40 games have been played, the respective points gained by the teams being as follows: —North 14, Central \2j, West 9, South 4 i. The second round will be commenced on Thursday evening next, when Dunedin West will meet Dunedin Central. The tournament is open to all chess players, and it is hoped that as many as possible will take advantage of the invitation to play in the remaining matches.
