MAGNA CARTA ISLAND

HISTORIC HOUSE PRESERVED. Runnymede Island, linked with the sealing of the common liberties of England in the Magna Carta, is to be protected and preserved in every detail. This decision was made known recently by Mr P. J. H. Hannon, M.P., who bought the island and the house upon it last month when they were put up for auction. Controversy has existed regarding the question whether the Great Charter entered into between King John and the barons was sealed in Runnymede Meadow or on the island. Mr Hannon said: “ In the house on the island where I intend to live is the Charter Room, with a stone-topped table in the centre bearing the inscription that on this spot the Magna Carta was sealed. June 15, 1215. Over the mantelpiece is an extract from the Charter, while around the walls are the crests of the knights and barons who took part. «This Charter Room was built many years by members of the Hai court family, one of whose ancestois was present on that day 720 years ago. I believe there is some reference to the preservation of- this rooni in the deed of sale, but, in any case, I shall see that it is not in any way disturbed. “ In addition, there is some lovely old oak panelling in the dining room and other ancient fittings which will be treasured. The whole house been modernised, but that has been exquisitely done, without affecting atmosphere or character. 1 Every association with history will be most carefully safeguarded. While I cannot throw the historic parts open to the public, delegations from schools, colleges or societies shall have all proper facilities to view the place.
