CROWN TENANTS

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the Executive of the New Zealand Crown Tenants’ Association was held at Timaru on Tuesday. The president, Mr D. C. Kidd, oc-. cupied the choir, and there were present Messrs Bell, Breen, Bennett, Brittendeu, Collins, Fenwick, Gillespie, Gregan, Hanmer, R. Henderson, H. J. Henderson, Kerr, Macintosh, Markham, Morrison, Moyle, Reid, Sanson and Yates. The resignation of the secretary, Mr G. W. Markham, was accepted with regret, and it was decided that an appreciation of his services be recorded in the minutes. Mr C. F. Rose was appointed acting secretary. It was decided to invite the South' Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury and North Otago members of Parliament to meet Crown tenants at a conference to be held in Timaru cn August 20, so that matters of vital importance might be discussed with the members before the next session of Parliament.,

A remit from the Waiho Downs branch read as follows:—“ That the Government be urged to rescind the law suspending revaluation of Crown lands until July 31, 1936, and that revaluation of over-rented areas be proceeded with without further delay. Failing revaluation at an early date, this association stresses the necessity, in fairness to Crown tenants, of an amendment to the Rural Mortgagors Final Adjustment Act, giving the Adjustment Commissions and the Court of Review power to deal with rental values.”—Mr' Moyle moved that the remit be adopted and forwarded to the Minister of Lands. —This was seconded by Mr Gregan and carried. The following remit was received from Waimate: —“That owing to the difficulties experienced in recent years by the settlers’ on the Waimate Settlement, and in view of the high rentals on these sections, the Minister of Lands bo asked to grant relief as far as possible by the remission of arrears of renf in deserving cases.” —The remit was carried on the motion of Messrs Sanson and Moyle.
