FATALITY AT QUEENSTOWN

MAN KILLED ON WHARF.

Orkney James Stevenson, aged 30, a married man, with one child, who resided at Queenstown, met his death yesterday afternoon while assisting in riveting operations on the coal chute of the s.s. Earnslaw. The steamer was lying at the wharf undergoing its annual overhaul. Stevenson was secured by a rope, and was standing on the belting of the ship “holding on” during the riveting of an iron plate. The vibration of the hammering shook cut the pin which held the chute, allowing it to drop, and in its fall it caught Stevenson and pinned him by the neck against the wharf. Dr Anderson was summoned immediately, but life was almost extinct when he arrived. The body was conveyed to the Lake County Hospital mortuary, where an inquest will be opened to-morrow. Stevenson was a motor driver by occupation, and for two years he was employed as a driver between Queenstown and Maori Point for Skippers, Ltd. About six weeks ago ho obtained temporary employment on the overhaul of the steamer, and was to have finished last night. He was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Janies Stevenson, of Crown terrace, Queenstown.
