PRACTICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The Rev. Percy Cooke gave a very enjoyable lecture on “Aspects of Faith Healing” at last Thursday’s meeting of the Dunedin Practical Psychology Club. Mrs H. S. Tily presided over a good attendance of members and -friends. Introducing his subject, Mr Cooke said that faith healing as generally understood was a direct miracle wrought by Gcd in answer, to prayer, but to him it covered a much wider field of activity. All healing \was a miracle as far as the human mind was concerned and was really faith healing. When an operation was performed the rest was left to Nature or God, everything depending on the way the system responded to the reaction. Nature had to readjust the blood circulation and heal the body. Medicine depended on faith—faith in those elements and discoveries of the laws and actions of God which men. had learnt to apply. Faith healing should supplement and not supplant medical science, but there were many troubles which the latter could not reach, and which were caused by mental or spiritual conflict. These were cases for the psychologist or the minister, but after the cause of conflict had been discovered and reconciliation effected between man and man, the forgiveness of the Creator was necessary to complete the cure. Confession and forgiveness had wonderful power in restoring the mind, and then the physical body responded also. Physical healing should not. be, regarded as paramount, however, as it was far more important that the mind and spirit should find harmony. The speaker quoted cases from experience illustrating the different aspects of faith healing, physical and otherwise. Mr J. Patton thanked Mr Cooke for his excellent address.
