OTAGO RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr J. B. Wootton) occupied the chair. APPEAL COMMITTEE’S RULINGS . Mr R. MTvenzie, honorary secretary of the Otago Referees’ Association, submitted the following questions for rulings by the Appeal Committee: —(1) A defending player runs back over bis own goal ling. With the ball in his possession. He attempts to get back into the field of play but before he can do so he is forced into touch in goal by an opponent. What should the decision be? f2) Under law 24 we find the following in the new circular from the English Union:—“lf from a penalty kick awarded for an infringement by the defending team in in-goal the ball hits a goal post and rebounds into the field of play, and be v played by an attacking player, the referee should order a drop out.” Is this correct? The answers were as follows:—(I) In all cases where the hall is wilfully kicked, passed or carried hack over the goal line by a defending player (except in the case of a try), and there made dead, the ball shall be brought back and a scrummage formed at the place from which it was wilfully passed, knocked or carried back. (2) Yes. PLAYER CAUTIONED N. P. Tilley, referee in the Senior Grade match between Southern and Pirates. wrote stating that he had. cautioned R. Neiper, of the Southern Club, for indiscriminate kicking. The player’s name to be placed on the cautioned list. GENERAL It was decided to accept an invitation from the Palmerston Football Club to attend its jubilee function on Saturday night, July 6. A letter was received from the Bay ot Plenty Union thanking the committee for a copy of the Otago Rugby Annual for 1935. The union was complimented on the excellence of the publication, which, the writer stated, did_ credit to those responsible for its compilation.

COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVE TEAM R. F. Batchelor, hon. secretary of the South Tuapeka Union, wrote stating that the following fixtures had been arranged by his union:—July 13, South Tuapeka v. Tuapeka, at Lawrence; July 20,. West Otago v. South Otago, at Tapanui. Mr Batchelor stated that he had arranged for the four selectors to pick the southern sub-union’s team at Tapanui after the match on July 20, and he asked to be advised of the travelling arrangements, etc., for the trial match at Alexandra before that date. Messrs Stuart, Jolly, and Spcddmg were appointed a sub-committee to make arrangements for the trial match at Alexandra, prior to the selection of the country team to play at North Otago and Invercargill.

JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE GAMES Mr Spedding said that he had been informed by Mr Phillips, a member of the Canterbury Union, that it was desirous of discontinuing its junior representative games with Otago . and Wellington. Otago, however, was due to send a team to Canterbury this year, and if the team went north the Canterbury Union would arrange for a match.
